The Many Different Faces Of London

London a global, multicultural city with history stretching back 2000 years. A grand, ugly, beautiful, eccentric, lively, chaotic, magnificent city. A city which for most of its history has been at the centre of things, it was the birthplace of many things too and some would even argue that it was London that gave birth to the modern World. Indeed, so much has been written about London that I feel that theres nothing new that I could add, so the best thing to do is to go to the photos.
1. The Palace of Westminster or simply the Houses of Parliament. An icon of London and what better place to start than here? Constructed by architect Sir Charles Barry with Augustus W. N. Pugin an authority on Gothic architecture as his assistant. The construction lasted over thirty years, but in the end it was worth it. What we have now is perhaps the most iconic building in the World.

1. Welcome to Naples or the first sights and sounds that greeted me when I stepped out of the central station. Piazza Garibaldi is one crazy place and sums up the city quite nicely.

Rotterdam is remarkably clean: the Dutch even wash the outside brickwork of their houses.

Rotterdam is well known for its busy port, however in the last few decades it also has become a byword for architectural innovation and experimentalism which is best exemplified by buildings like Koolhaas' Kunsthal and Bloms' Cube House. Yet this was made possible only by the terrible destruction wrought by the Nazi bombs in 1940. After the war the pragmatic Rotterdamers opted for reinvention instead of reconstruction, but despite all that the city does not lack old stuff - theres loads of that in Delfshaven as well as in the elegant residential districts to the west of the city centre. But I came for the modern stuff and even though the weather was absolutely horrible, with constant rain and strong winds, I enjoyed Rotterdam nonetheless, it is perfect for walking and theres no shortage of drinking and eating places of which I made quite an extensive use.
