Reviews: An impressive return, which finds the duo tapping further into their Hungarian roots, both lyrically and musically, resorting to ethnic instruments that add a more colourful and vibrant tone to their sound. One of the finest Pagan/Folk releases this year.
The Moon and the Nightspirit was formed in 2003 by Agnes and Mihaly. It is a mystical journey into the amaranthine realm of dreams and beauty, long-forgotten by modern man. A journey inspired by pagan fables, ancient Hungarian folk music and nature itself.
The band recorded a promotional EP in 2004, which earned them a deal with Equilibrium Music for the release of their first album, "Of Dreams Forgotten and Fables Untold", recorded and released on the following year. This album was very well received and made a name for The Moon and the Nightspirit in the musical scene. They played several festivals/concerts, both in Hungary and abroad, and even at a live TV show on one of Hungarian National television's programmes dedicated to folk/world music.
Recordings for their second album, "Regõ Rejtem", began around mid 2006, again at the band's own studio, Elysion. "Regõ rejtem" is a line from ancient Hungarian minstrel songs, which means "I conjure with magic", or, in words even closer to Shamanism, "révüléssel révülök" ("I am ecstatic in a trance"), a vision that suits perfectly the mood on the duo's songs. This time they have traveled further into times bygone, rekindling the flames of the Taltos (Hungarian shaman) and reawakening the spirits of the Elders. The music has acquired a more varied and colorful tone through the use of varied ethnic instrumentation (such as kaval, tapan, jew's harp or zither), and has also become significantly more energetic and vibrant, without sacrificing the unique ambiance that the band had found on their debut album.
"Regõ Rejtem" also finds the duo leaving behind the English language, and using only Hungarian lyrics this time. They come in the form of poems - chants dedicated to Mother Earth, the spiritual world and the ancient wisdom, and have also served, together with the music, as inspiration for several superb paintings that Agnes has produced to illustrate the album. These three elements (music, lyrics and illustrations) form a strong unity, and only with the existence of these three does "Regõ Rejtem" become a whole.
The album is presented in a DVD-size Digipak, and comes with a full-colour booklet complete with Agnes' paintings and both Hungarian and English versions of the lyrics.

Выход альбома Moon Far Away, третьего по счёту, - безусловно событие, особенно если учесть, что альбом почти одновременно вышел в России на Shadowplay и во Франции на Prikosnovenie. Теперь все, кому интересно творчество этого замечательного проекта, смогут без особого труда найти и приобрести "родной" диск "Беловодие". Варианты оформления альбома во Франции и России отличаются, а в русском издании имеется даже дополнительный трэк. Французский диск я в руках не держал, поэтому буду говорить о русском варианте. Оформление получилось стильное и приятное, хоть коробочка и не digi-pack, но весь дизайн очень продуман и оставляет самые хорошие впечатления. Буклет содержит все тексты альбома, которые к слову сказать очень интересны и рекомендуются мной к обязательному прочтению.
Альбом почти полностью состоит из древних поморских песен русского Севера, которым Moon Far Away придали современное и эзотерическое звучание. Поэтому "Беловодие" значительно отличается от того, что вы слышали на двух прошлых релизах. Теперь можно с уверенностью сказать, что появился на нашей "тёмной" сцене проект, не слепо копирующий западные стандарты (как увы, большинство исполнителей), но и привносящий в музыку славянские корни (для многих "космополитов" так ненавистные). И пожалуй самое главное - европейская neofolk/etherial музыкальная основа очень органично сочетается с поморскими напевами, и только за одно это можно уже поставить памятник.
"Беловодие" получился очень зрелым и целостным. Рекомендуется к обязательному прослушиванию.
Альбом записывался почти 5 лет. В нем MOON FAR AWAY окончательно отошли от европейской готики. Теперь любые отсылки к DEAD CAN DANCE можно считать бессмыслицей. "Беловодие" - это зрелость, и не столько для самих MOON FAR AWAY, сколько для всей русской "дарк-музыки". Хотя в этом контексте возле самого термина "дарк" можно поставить большой знак вопроса. "Беловодие" - это традиция и ритуал, слитые в одно. Это русские фолк-тексты, собранные по крупицам в пустеющих северных поселениях. Рассказанные хриплыми голосами старух, они воплощены на альбоме молодыми и звонкими вокалами Anastasia и Count Ash. И благодаря этому альбом звучит как нельзя более достоверно. Можно, конечно, провести некоторые аналогии с небезызвестным московским проектом ВОЛГА, но почему-то не хочется. Тем более что музыкально "Беловодие" развивается весьма неожиданно - от вялых гитарных переборов и звона колокольчиков к чисто электронным пассажам. Так одна из лучших композиций альбома "Не Вели Ветры" напоминает KIRLIAN CAMERA, а "Волна Шумит" отсылает уже к неким мрачным ритуалам. Кульминация же наступает в песне "Смерть", где в обрамлении далеких и печальных хоралов звучит старушечий голос и с ним весь Русский Север, как в былине, предстает перед внутренним взором. И как-то сразу все звуковые изыскания - оригинальные и, безусловно, талантливые - становятся вторичными по отношению к внутренней гармонии и красоте, наполняющей эту работу.

Выход альбома Moon Far Away, третьего по счёту, - безусловно событие, особенно если учесть, что альбом почти одновременно вышел в России на Shadowplay и во Франции на Prikosnovenie. Теперь все, кому интересно творчество этого замечательного проекта, смогут без особого труда найти и приобрести "родной" диск "Беловодие". Варианты оформления альбома во Франции и России отличаются, а в русском издании имеется даже дополнительный трэк. Французский диск я в руках не держал, поэтому буду говорить о русском варианте. Оформление получилось стильное и приятное, хоть коробочка и не digi-pack, но весь дизайн очень продуман и оставляет самые хорошие впечатления. Буклет содержит все тексты альбома, которые к слову сказать очень интересны и рекомендуются мной к обязательному прочтению.
Альбом почти полностью состоит из древних поморских песен русского Севера, которым Moon Far Away придали современное и эзотерическое звучание. Поэтому "Беловодие" значительно отличается от того, что вы слышали на двух прошлых релизах. Теперь можно с уверенностью сказать, что появился на нашей "тёмной" сцене проект, не слепо копирующий западные стандарты (как увы, большинство исполнителей), но и привносящий в музыку славянские корни (для многих "космополитов" так ненавистные). И пожалуй самое главное - европейская neofolk/etherial музыкальная основа очень органично сочетается с поморскими напевами, и только за одно это можно уже поставить памятник.
"Беловодие" получился очень зрелым и целостным. Рекомендуется к обязательному прослушиванию.
Альбом записывался почти 5 лет. В нем MOON FAR AWAY окончательно отошли от европейской готики. Теперь любые отсылки к DEAD CAN DANCE можно считать бессмыслицей. "Беловодие" - это зрелость, и не столько для самих MOON FAR AWAY, сколько для всей русской "дарк-музыки". Хотя в этом контексте возле самого термина "дарк" можно поставить большой знак вопроса. "Беловодие" - это традиция и ритуал, слитые в одно. Это русские фолк-тексты, собранные по крупицам в пустеющих северных поселениях. Рассказанные хриплыми голосами старух, они воплощены на альбоме молодыми и звонкими вокалами Anastasia и Count Ash. И благодаря этому альбом звучит как нельзя более достоверно. Можно, конечно, провести некоторые аналогии с небезызвестным московским проектом ВОЛГА, но почему-то не хочется. Тем более что музыкально "Беловодие" развивается весьма неожиданно - от вялых гитарных переборов и звона колокольчиков к чисто электронным пассажам. Так одна из лучших композиций альбома "Не Вели Ветры" напоминает KIRLIAN CAMERA, а "Волна Шумит" отсылает уже к неким мрачным ритуалам. Кульминация же наступает в песне "Смерть", где в обрамлении далеких и печальных хоралов звучит старушечий голос и с ним весь Русский Север, как в былине, предстает перед внутренним взором. И как-то сразу все звуковые изыскания - оригинальные и, безусловно, талантливые - становятся вторичными по отношению к внутренней гармонии и красоте, наполняющей эту работу.

Notes: Identifying with the artists of that time, CircuZ KumP and Ataraxia have written a collection of songs that could have been played at the beginning of the XXth century in the Cabaret of Heaven rather than in the Tavern of Crooks.
Reviews: With the first listening session of the Paris Spleen cd from Ataraxia together with the drama company CircuZ Kump the sonic spectacle immediately reminded me of two things: the HBO Carnivale series and the band Dresden Dolls. And indeed, this concept album deals with cabarets, circusses, fun fairs and freak shows from the early 20th century which you could find in cities such as Paris or New York. The so-called ‘cabarets macabres’ or ‘ghost cabarets’, such as you could see in a.o. the Boulevard de Clichy, really appeal to the imaginative, as it shows all the abberations we don’t (want to) confront in the reaility of every-day life. The woman with moustache, the elastic man, the deviner, could salesman or man-in-chains. The esthetics of madness, the burlesque and the extraordinary. And if you look closely you might catch a glimpse of hell. Add a decadent atomsphere, rich folk instrumentation with kettle drums and cimbals, trombones and the expected accordion. Next add a healthy dose of absinth and literary poetic pretentions in that vein from Baudelaire and you come pretty close to what you will hear on this phenomenal Paris Spleen album. Very special!

Reviews: Less than a year after "Dark Age of Reason" and following a few live shows, Arcana introduce "Cantar de Procella". The now sold out 3 song MCD "Lizabeth" served as an appetizer for the album, which was finally released by June 1997. As hinted at in the songs present on "Lizabeth", "Cantar..." brought a few changes. The band lost none of the glorious and epic might of "Dark Age...", yet chose to deliver them in a more intense and bright manner, leaving it up to "The Opening of the Wound" to link both works. They adopted a less somber character, yet were still riddled with melancholy and sorrow as well as with the characteristic choirs, orchestrations and percussions of their debut, which had become even bolder this time. Monotonous and cyclic harpsichord or acoustic guitar melodies served as background for the songs to evolve and grow, and again the Dead Can Dance parallel was drawn, proving that Arcana was clearly in no way inferior to them. The duo delve deep into uplifting and enveloping moods again; magical weavings of dark and obscure nature which hold strong references to Baroque music carrying you into a fantasy world of ages past. As a whole, the album, or at least the instrumentation, tends to sound more varied and dynamic than "Dark Age of Reason" which held the same dismal mood and tone throughout the whole of its length. That is still present here, although it works in a much broader way, but its medieval and ecclesiastical essence is in my opinion much more profound and relevant. The music remains luxuriously orchestrated, although still simple in structure, yet the performances show improvement, especially the ones of Ida. The doomy, march-like pace of "Chant of the Awakening" takes you on a torturous and depressive journey that reaches "The Song of Solitude", where Ida dares to indulge in an accapela workout whose title could not be more appropriate. Now more than ever, the vocals and choirs in Arcana's pieces are used as instruments - various chants and vocal harmonies which are deprived of any lyrical content are to be found on "Cantar de Procella". "Void of Silence" sways gently and monotonously onto "Cantar de Procella", where Peter sup plies a simple harpsichord riff for Ida's vocals and additional arrangements to lay upon. The bold orchestrations and female choirs on "Aeterna Doloris" should set this as one of Arcana's most epic pieces, along with "The Opening of the Wound" and its huge choirs. "The Song of Preparation" is build around male choirs and anticipates "God of the Winds", yet another smooth and epic dirge that blossoms calmly. "The Dreams Made of Sand" and "La Salva de Profundis" use a formula similar to the title track yet with different instrumentation (a monotonous background melody from which things grows into majestic proportions) and "Gathering of the Storm" seems to transport Arcana into a more contemporary Neo-Classical musical frame with less of a Medieval aura which suits them quite well too. Finally, "The Tree Within" and its drifting strings along with Ida's soaring vocals bid you farewell in a blissful and serene manner as you return to the real world...
