Happy House pairs French pop with punk / new wave influences. Noémie Vachet provides the sultry vocals while Pierre Musy lays on a tight production with just the right amount of guitars, keyboards and percussion. I find Vachet to be quite a provocative vocalist, a Claudine Longet for the 21st century. The EP Metamorphosis attests to her charms. She can be a seductive chantresse on “Fige Dans La Cire” or lead a wall of punk-drenched guitars as on the title track. These five tracks (plus three bonus takes) offers melodic sexy music with plenty of hard rock tension.

If the EP whetted your appetite then be sure to check out the longer La Vie Defendue. There are nine tunes totalling about 28 minutes of similarly arresting music. “Attente” has a catchy melody and is a smart poppish romp. Happy House is full of lilting melodies backed by strong guitars and driving beats. One of the best tracks is “Pres De Moi”, a beautiful ballad with orchestral leanings. La Vie Defendue is a very satisfying collection of smart French pop/rock.

Naming your band after the song of another band is presumptious and, tricky.

Let’s face it; If you suck, and I mean suck with the white hot power that only truly bad newborn bands are able, you embarass not only yourself, but you sully the good name upon which you wished only tribute. Forshame, besmirching your idol that way.

Happy House took that presumptiuous first step. The catch is, they don’t suck. Far from generating excessive amounts of vaccum pressure; Happy House managed to put together 5 tracks that (mostly) soothe your musical soul, in a positive, non-suck kinda way.

Building from a strongly beat driven chill established early in track 1, “Fige Dans La Cire“, HH shifts quickly into second with “Que Je Suis” with it’s creepy minor key and breathy vocals.

Departing for the title track, “Metamorphoses” is intense and angelic. Vocals take center stage, pulling you in with a tinge of desperation until *pow* the rock and roll chorus comes thundering out of your listener-tronic-player-type-thing (iPod, Transistor Radio, what have you). My French is admittedly awful, but this track almost seems out of place.. and a little nervous.

Happy House - Metamorphoses“Correspondance“, track four on Metamorphoses adds some light male vocals. The change up is appreciated, but this song isn’t much to write home about. It would feel right at home on radio, packaged under 3 minutes as it is, mixed well and with enough energy to carry through.

Alas, “Time is Over“. And that happens to be the name of the fith and final track. This just didn’t work for me. It’s a bit over the top, all fast and frenetic, without much charm to pull it out of the hole. It has a great rock feel for about 4 bars, and you think something is about to happen; It just never does.

Actualizado a 12 de Octubre de 2006: Como podéis comprobar, los links ya no funcionan, puesto que la banda se ha disuelto, una lástima, ya que me encantaba lo que hacían… pero bueno, por un lado, ahora podemos encontrar a Noémie en el pod y video cast de Noisepod y en su MySpace y a Pierre en su página oficial y también en su MySpace.
Bueno, ahora empiezo con uno de los discos que más me han gustado de Jamendo, que es el Metamorphoses de Happy House, disco que probablemente no hubiese llegado a escuchar si no hubiese sido por iniciativas como esta de compartir libremente la música.

Comentario: Happy House es una banda de Avignon (Francia) liderada por Noémie Alazard y Pierre Musy y que saca su nombre de una canción del disco Kaleidoscope de Siouxsie And The Banshees, editado en 1980. Los descubrí ojeando grupos en Jamendo y este disco, aunque corto (5 canciones y apenas 20 minutos), me ha encantado, de lo mejor que he escuchado en mucho tiempo.

En este Metamorphoses descubrimos un pop-rock bastante melódico y con mucha fuerza, que canción a canción va subiendo el ritmo, consiguiendo atraparte y logrando transmitirte (o al menos conmigo lo consigue) una sensación simultánea de felicidad y melancolía. Y puede parecer exagerado, pero realmente este disco no puedo describirlo con palabras, sino que hay que escucharlo para poder sentirlo plenamente.

Técnicamente me parece un disco muy bien ejecutado, con un sonido depurado y un trabajo de producción bastante logrado. La voz de Noémi es sencillamente deliciosa… me encanta, y además consigue que el francés inluso me parezca un idioma melodioso, que eso para alguien que lo ha estudiado durante 2 años y siempre le ha parecido bastante feo, es un logro.
