Michael Buble' about 'Call Me Irresponsible' TanyaB 20-04-2007 07:07

 (170x169, 4Kb)
Ask Michael Bublé how he felt going in to record his third studio album, 'Call Me Irresponsible', and this artist with 11 million albums sold and two Grammy nominations under his belt can sum it up in one word.

"Terrified," he says simply. Terrified?

"Completely, because I knew that it had to be better than the first two — that it had to show growth without alienating anyone, and that’s a tough line. So I sat there from the very beginning and came up with the songs, put together the skeleton, and thought about what arrangers I would hire. I even ended up at the mastering session, which artists rarely attend. I wanted to be involved in every aspect because I wanted it to be conceptually beautiful."

Michael has certainly achieved success on that front. As with his previous two 143/Reprise bestsellers, 2003’s self-titled debut and 2005’s multi-platinum follow-up 'It’s Time', 'Call Me Irresponsible' boasts more of Michael’s buoyant, modern interpretations of standards from a variety of eras, including songs by such greats as Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton, Cy Coleman, Gamble and Huff, and others, as well as two self-penned originals, including the first single, the uplifting love song called "Everything."

But it’s hardly business as usual for this Vancouver native. It never is for Michael, whose irrepressible spirit, engaging humor, and confident charisma once led the New York Times to call him "an entertainer who is completely at home on the stage."

His new CD, which he calls "my remark on the state of love," contains a depth of feeling that will surprise and delight long-term fans and impress those new to his music. "To me, what’s different about this CD is that it has a certain raw emotion because I recorded many of these songs live in the studio." Michael introduces the electrifying, impeccably orchestrated set to follow with the opening track, Cy Coleman’s "The Best Is Yet To Come," (made famous by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and others). Then there’s the exhilarating, salsa-flavored "It Had Better Be Tonight," written by Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini, which Michael attacks with a hot-blooded vengeance—"another very sexy song…and edgy." From there, he takes on "Me and Mrs. Jones," the 1972 Gamble and Huff classic popularized by soul singer Billy Paul. "David (Foster) brought it to me, I’d never actually heard it before," Michael says. "We wanted it to be authentic and tell the story." Next up is Leonard Cohen’s "I’m Your Man" from the Canadian singer/songwriter’s 1988 album of the same name. "I always thought it was a wonderful song — desperate, sexy, and dark," Michael says. "I actually called Leonard and told him I was afraid of performing it live. When he asked me why, I said because he’d written too sexy of a song and I was afraid men were going to throw their underpants at me. He just laughed and said, ‘I wouldn’t worry too much about that.’"

Then there’s a swinging, hep-cat version of Mel Tormé’s 1962 pop hit "Comin’ Home Baby," featuring vocals from Philly soul faves Boys II Men; and a sentimental, self-penned ballad "Lost," co-written with Chang and Canadian singer-songwriter Jann Arden. "It’s an anthem for star-crossed lovers," Michael says. "Sometimes relationships don’t work out because love isn’t enough, but that doesn’t mean you have to discard the person. There is a way to end a relationship and still be there when they need you. That’s basically what it’s about."

A languid, emotional rendition of Eric Clapton’s ballad "Wonderful Tonight," on which Michael duets with Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins, whose work has been covered by everyone from Sarah Vaughn to Ella Fitzgerald follows. "I’ve always been very sentimental about that song," Michael says. "What is interesting about that track is here I am, a 31-year-old guy from Canada who’s singing a song that means so much to me with a 61-year-old man from Brazil, who’s singing in his own language but it means the exact same thing to both of us."

Other highlight’s include two of Michael’s original songs, including the acoustic-guitar driven "Everything," co-written with Amy Foster-Gillies and Alan Chang (who also co-wrote Michael’s touching hit ballad "Home" off 'It’s Time') and produced by fellow Canadian Bob Rock (Bon Jovi, Metallica, Motley Crue, Bryan Adams). "I wrote that song about the great happiness of real love, but at the same time I was making a statement about the world," Michael says. "We’re living in really crazy times, and I wanted to say that no matter what’s happening, this person in my life is what really makes it worthwhile."

Rounding out Call Me Irresponsible is Frank Sinatra’s "That’s Life," which, in Michael’s hands, becomes a powerhouse complete with a full choir. "I brought the song to a wonderful guy named

JAZZ STAR TanyaB 14-04-2007 15:37

THE handsome Italian-Canadian fisherman’s son who became a 10 million-selling Grammy Awarded jazz singer is holding court in Studio City, Hollywood’s engine room.

Last night, Michael Bublé played a $160,000-a-table event for Muhammad Ali’s Parkinson’s disease charity at a nearby venue. And Sharon Stone and Diana Ross were among those left gobsmacked by his incredible voice.

 (200x200, 24Kb)

Successful across the globe, in Britain Bublé’s first two albums have established him alongside Jamie Cullum and Norah Jones in the Michael Parkinson-endorsed cozy jazz sector. But, as his astonishing new album Call Me Irresponsible shows, Michael, born in Vancouver in September 1975, has a voice several universes above most mere mortals. So far above, in fact, that his manager wanted a different title for the album.

“He wanted to call it The Real Deal,” laughs Michael, 31, stabbing his shaved Parmesan salad. “I said, ‘Are you joking?’ But I love him dearly. He’s supported me all the way through and I wouldn’t be where I am without him but The Real Deal? That’s the sort of title that will come back and bite you. It’s just setting yourself up to be knocked down.”

Michael laughs again, but his manager’s desire is understandable, particularly when you hear Bublé’s ravishing version of Always On My Mind. Both there and on Billy Paul’s Philadelphia Soul classic Me And Mrs Jones, Bublé does the impossible – creating cover versions that are at least as great, if not better, than classic originals. So why entitle the album Call Me Irresponsible?

“It sums me up,” he succinctly replies.

The whirlwind of fame has hit Michael hard. Although he is currently in a relationship with 24-year-old The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt, for years he struggled to maintain an on-off relationship with actress/ballerina Debbie Timuss. Michael’s too guarded to admit it, but the chances are their relationship inspired his performance on Always On My Mind.

“I was very afraid of that song,” he admits. “I had a lot of guilt to be honest with you. I was on the edge. I don’t think I opened my eyes the whole time I was singing it.”

Is monogamy a challenge?

“No, I think challenge is the wrong word,” says Michael. “Listen, my girlfriend works with really good-looking actor guys and I’m sure people hit on her all the time. Maybe she’s intrigued, but she makes a decision. I always think of it as not much different from a diet. You may like to pig out on pasta, but what are the consequences?”

Bublé is clearly a man with the world at his feet. One night on tour he had to get very stern with a gay fan phoning his bedroom from the hotel lobby.

“I told him I’d come down there and hit him,” he says. “Not because of what he wanted to do to me but because he was phoning my room at that time in the morning.”

Michael’s third album makes it clear that his is a still-growing talent.

“My voice is getting deeper,” he observes. “There’s a big tonal difference between 25 and 31. I don’t know if I’m getting better, but I’m learning what to do with it all – learning from my mistakes. I’m starting to produce now too.”

Michael is essentially untrained and primitive, and openly honest about how he defined his world-shaking style.

“It’s partly stealing,” he admits. “The first time Tony Bennett and I got together we talked about this. I’m so lucky. I get to steal the life’s work of my idols – it’s an honour. Ella Fitzgerald, Bennett and Bobby Darin. Presley and Sinatra. I can steal all these things I love like the dulcet quiver Dean Martin has.” Cue a pitch-perfect Dean impersonation.

The afternoon takes a very agreeable turn as Michael vocally demonstrates a selection of these singers he’s stolen from onto my recording iPod.

“The more I think back, the crazier I was to try what I tried,” he smiles. “I come from a family of commercial fishermen and my grandfather’s a plumber with no musical training.

“The first music I studied were the duets between Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald,” he tells me. “I was going out with a girl and her parents asked what music I liked. I was trying to impress them so I said, ‘I love Ella Fitzgerald. He’s one of my favourites’ – because I thought it was Louise (sic) Armstrong... I thought that was the girl in the partnership. I was only 13, but I found out later and thought, ‘What a fool!’”

But what a voice that fool has.
