“In Germany at the wrong place”
Abroad successfully, in Germany outsider. The “Scorpions” are on world tour, but in their own country they play no single concert. With SPIEGEL ONLINE they spoke about bad press, cudgeling extreme right-wingers and the insatiable desire to Hanover.
Spiegel Online: Mr. Meine, Mr. Schenker, Mr. Jabs, the “Scorpions are currently on world tour in America, Asia and Europe. In Germany, however, they play rarely – why?
Klaus Meine: Of Course Germany is very important for us, but we go where we have the strongest feedback. This is for us the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Asia – where we played in the last month. However, we played in the last of 2006 at the “Wacken Open Air” in front of first very skeptical Hardcore Metal fans. But that was amazing.
Spiegel Online: Affection you don´t get so much in your own country any more. A German critic wrote once, rock-connoisseurs couldn´t conceive of something more badly than to be friends of Scorpions. Cause of such press you never thought: “Germany don´t deserve us, we go”?
Meine: Well, we often ask ourselves, what would have been if we stayed in the United States at the middle of the 80´. Lately someone said to me, “So what? You would be an American band.” What makes us special today, to be a global band, we never would succeed.
Rudolf Schenker: Really? That´s the question. I already had lived in the USA for a time, unfortunately it wasn´t subserve for the band. As a soloist it´s not easy. But it´s true: If we would become an American band, we never could feel and integrate the political change of the 80´, with Perestroika and the fall of the wall in Berlin to our music like we´ve done it that time.
Spiegel Online: …when you wrote the soundtrack for the fall of the wall “Wind Of Change” 1989. How has Germany cope with the change, which you´ve conjured at that time and the reunion and unity?
Schenker: The best is that the fall of the Berlin wall was peaceful, no shot. Also: At which point, especially in the early days, things should or could be done a totally other way as they were done?
Matthias Jabs: The world cup 2006 has shown that Germany has a very great unity. That such a so great event like the world cup is managed by a unit country so nice and peaceful, that´s amazing.
Spiegel Online: Even the world cup showed some mistakes. A former speaker of the federal government advised foreign guests to avoid special federal states in East Germany.
Meine: Right-wing radicalism is the point where you get remembered abroad on your German descent. When a 18 years old MTV moderator asks you in Mexico city, how it feels to live in a country, where foreigners get hunted and beaten almost to death. Then the band is challenged to take a stand and show also the positive sites of Germany.
Jabs: Well, the world cup also showed that the Germans learned to deal calm with symbols like national flags, which was a big step to normality. In the conservative US media, for example “FOX News”, reported very badly about the European states which are not goes to the Iraq war. But even they couldn´t close their eyes for the pictures of black-red-gold flags and peaceful world cup fan festivals.
Meine: I think that in Germany the unit provides more critical than abroad. In South Korea we were driven to the border with a great press a few weeks ago and asked us about the subject reunion. In Korea they still dream about what Germany already has reached.
Spiegel Online: How did you experienced the fall of the wall in Berlin 1989?
Schenker: We were in Paris and had a meeting with the record company, a TV also run there. I was sitting with the back to the screen, all of a sudden Klaus said “Hey look, is it the wall?” It was amazing!
Meine: I often think how nice it would have been to be in Berlin in the evening of November, 9th.
Schenker: Oh like it was, it was also great.
Spiegel Online: Ironically the worldwide success “Wind Of Change” was the reason that the Scorpions as a rock band are not longer taken seriously in Germany.
Meine: On our latest album “Humanity Hour I” we let it rock harder and the rock world in Germany accept it very positive. But like it is: We were always outsider in Germany and that we are still today.
Schenker: We had this feeling very early in our band history, that we´re at the wrong place in Germany. We didn´t want to make “Krautrock”, we didn´t want to sing in German – our former manager even said, we need to change our name to “Stalingrad”!
Spiegel Online: You´re mainly abroad since decades, but you come back home from San Francisco, Paris or Tokyo to Hanover. With which feelings?

Klaus: We have never wanted to limit us. When we have started, we ever had the vision of bringing the music around the world. But we also came back here every time with pleasure.
Exactly 30 years ago Rudolf Schenker has built up the Scorpions. 1972 the first album “Lonesome Crow” released, 1991 the most successful album “Crazy World” with their biggest hit “Wind Of Change”.
Rudi: We were SO successful in our own country that the people sometimes did not want to listen anymore to the song cause it was played nonstop.
Oliver Geissen: You are loving me to death is it autobiographic or whose idea was it?
Rudi: This can happen, or?
Oliver: You ever been close to it?
Rudi: Every time in the Rock-n-Roll
Oliver: Aha, I see…
Klaus: This time it was a robot love.
Oliver: Can you guys realize the success that the whole Asian and American market has reacted so positive on it. I just have said it in the introduction that no other German band is so successful abroad like you. What makes you so special abroad?
Klaus: No clue. We went to Asia very early. We have played in Japan the first time 78' and recorded our first live album “Tokyo Tapes” there. It was a tremendous success. This has brought us to America. Naturally we went back to Asia every time. Not only Japan also whole South-East-Asia - Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, where we played again last year. I think they are very true fans, rock music is very popular there, the people know how to rock and we have so much fun to play in this part of the world.
Rudi: From the first time we have adjusted to the international market. It means, you must have a special “Vib” in the music which is global. I think this was why people all around the world have understand us and that is the point.
Klaus: And I also had sung Japanese!
Oliver: You had sung Japanese??
Klaus started singing “Kojo no Tsuki” a Capella….AND NO PLAYBACK!!
Oliver: I can not say now if it is grammatically correct, but it sounds Japanese.
Klaus: No that is ok.
Oliver: You are not any longer 20 years old, when you perform on stage it is finally a physical act – a world tour. Where you get the physically motivation when you reached everything 3 – 4 times? Gold records, platinum, all awards! That you still say “that is so awesome, we move on!”?
Klaus: We had so much success in the 80s especially in the USA. Then we have had the feeling in the 80 that we never had the chance to play in GDR, they never let us in, so we said “ok, let us go to Russia!”. Via Budapest/Hungary we went to the former Soviet Union and had played in former Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. Moscow one year later, the legendary Moscow Peace Festival. This were new inspirations what we have experienced and now it is the same in India. We went there not the first time in December 2007. We have played years before in Bangalore. We have played 3 big shows there in December. It is unbelievable, the enthusiasm of the young people and how they get crazy about rock music, know all our songs and sing along. We are so amazed by ourselves and totally enthused.
Oliver: I think your fans are so happy that you are looking every time for new challenges and you do not say “ok, now we make all 3 years a small German tour in some clubs and do not get stressed.” , but that you are still looking for new challenges.
Klaus: We have seen it on so many shows, especially in Middle East. We have played in Israel, in Tel Aviv. We have played in front of the pyramids, open air in Cairo, we were in Lebanon, a big show in Beirut. When young people told you “ In the times of the civil war when we did not had power during the night and in the one hour we had power we have listen to your music and we did not knew if we would survive. “ So it means, you can convey so much hope with music, it is not only “Hey let's rock” you can facilitate so much and you can built bridges with music.
Oliver: We would wish that you will look for new challenges in the next 20-30 Years and that you will rock for a long time. Thanks for being here. Thanks Rudi, thanks Klaus

История 1. Это произошло в самом начале карьеры группы во время фестиваля в Германии , где разыгрывался главный приз - приглашение на студию записи. Scorpions выиграли это приглашение и начали записывать песню "I am going mad". Эта студия была среднего уровня и качество оборудования было не высоким. Во время записи песни после слов "I am going mad" Клаус должен был крикнуть, но оборудование не было слишком мощным. Клаусу предложили крикнуть где-нибудь в углу, он попытался , но опять ничего не вышло. Все время крик получался тихим, после чего Клаус даже кричал в ведро, но и это не помогало. В итоге запись не получилась и группа была вынуждена искать новую студию.
История 2.Работа группы на студии записи всегда была тяжелой и интенсивной. Большую часть своего времени они записывали песни и очень часто им приходилось перезаписывать их. Они просиживали на студии целыми днями, всегда были голодными, усталыми и поэтому обычно забывали что-нибудь доделать. Конечно тратились и нервы, что иногда приводило к конфликтам. Однажды у них возникла проблемма с одной песней, они были недовольны музыкой и песню надо было перезаписывать. Но Герман так устал, особенно его ноги, что не мог продолжать и откозался. Группе пришлось приложить немало усилий, что он взял свои барабанные палочки и вернулся записывать песню. Когда все закончилось,то все так устали, что не могли ничего делать, они решили пойти посмотреть как там Герман. Все были очень удивлены, когда увидели спящего Германа лежащего на полу с распростертыми руками и ногами, так он устал в тот вечер!!!
История 3. Это понастоящему ужасная история произошла в 1974 году, когда Scorpions играли в Bielefeld в "Badewanne". Сцена на которой они играли спереди была отгорожена от земли барьером. В конце первого выступления Клаус решил сделать еще один прыжок на землю со сцены.Он разбежался и прыгнул, чтобы перепрыгнуть барьер.Он собирался сделать великолепный финальный прыжок, однако его он забыл про потолок над перегородкой и ударился об него головой. Как мертвая птица он упал на землю и показалась кровь, а когда все вернулись закулисы, подумали "Куда подевался Клаус?". Людям в "Badewanne" концерт очень понравился и они приветствовали Клауса пока все не осознали, что его череп пробит. Тогда его срочно отправили в больницу.
История 4. Иногда Scorpions применяли спортивные трюки на своих концертах. Очень часто Клаус совершал прыжки на сцене пока Герман играл на барабанах. Он прыгал между Германом и микрофоном, а потом быстро начинал петь. Но не все сцены были достаточно длинные по сравнению со стандартными размерами. Несколько раз Клаус падал со сцены прямо на зрителей. Ничего удивительного, что это случалось, ведь хорошо прыгнуть в достаточно тяжелых ботинках не так уж легко. В итоге происходили различные случаи. Однажды Клаус прыгнул к краю сцены, где было много фанов и некоторые из них стащили его со сцены. В итоге они вывихнули ему пальцы и слегка оцарапали. Конечно ничего страшного, но все равно...
История 5. Хорошо известно, что Michael Schenker периодически присоединялся к группе и покидал ее. Музыканты в группе часто сменялись. Каждый раз как Michael покидал Scorpions нужен был новый гитарист. Matthias Jabbs всегда был рядом и спасал группу. Но он не был постоянным членом группы. Когда однажды Michael вернулся, Matthias снова перестал играть в группе.Группа начала свой тур, но Michael покинул их опять и срочно была нужна помощь Matthiasа. Matthias в это время отдыхал со своей подругой и Скорпы не имели представления где его искать. Они только знали, что он мог проживать в доме родителей его подруги и они еще знали имя, которое было написано на двери дома. Это была настоящая проблема. Однако менеджер нашел его и группа была спасена еще раз.

Из касс Кремлевского дворца послали со словами, что у них нет информации о поступлении в продажу билетов. На сайтах в нете билетов тоже нет. Хотя на другие концерты 26 апреля уже висят.
