Traditional tribute albums normally feature one artist paying tribute to another in an attempt to evoke their legendary forebear. But when Nnenna Freelon set her vocal sights on songs associated with Billie Holiday, she determined that she wanted to emulate the spirit, rather than the sound, of the great "Lady Day." Freelon's sixth Concord Jazz release (August 23), Blueprint of a Lady - Sketches of Billie Holiday, coincides with the 90th anniversary of Holiday's birth, yet the five-time GRAMMY® nominee presents a moving and uniquely contemporary homage -- a distinctively refreshing take on the legendary jazz singer's firmly established contributions to music.
Blueprint of a Lady - Sketches of Billie Holiday is lovingly comprised of 15 tracks, featuring boldly fresh interpretations of tunes strongly associated with Billie Holiday. Listen to "God Bless The Child," "Don't Explain," "Them There Eyes," "Strange Fruit" (sung in a medley with a Latin-inflected "Willow Weep For Me"), or the reggae-infused version of "All of Me," and you reach the inescapable conclusion that deep admiration, not imitation, is Freelon's inspired intention.
On Blueprint of a Lady - Sketches of Billie Holiday Holiday's feisty spirit and independence, even her selection and interpretation of signature tunes, are presented against the backdrop of her time and ours, thus assuming new significance and traveling beyond mere tribute to powerful musical statement. "Billie Holiday really sang what she had to say in her own way," says Freelon. Трибьют Билли Холидей от трубача Теренса Бланчарда довольно меланхоличная и часто мрачная вещь. Не такое оригинальное, нежели обычно, звучание
(здесь видно сильное влияние Винтона Марсалиса, а временами также ссылки на Майлса Девися и Тада Джонса) материала Lady Day чуть веселей, чем вторая часть "I Cried for You". Аранжировки трубача для несвинговой струнной партии порой гнетущи, порой граничат с фоновой музыкой и стремятся отягощать композицию. Единственная яркая точка - пять прекрасных вокальных партий Джени Брисон, которая разумно не пытается звучать как Билли Холидей и воспринимается довольно хорошо. В остальном - разочарование.

Trumpeter Terence Blanchard's tribute to Billie Holiday is a rather melancholy and often downbeat affair. Sounding less original than usual (he displays a strong Wynton Marsalis influence and also hints at times at both Miles Davis and Thad Jones), there is little joy to these renditions of Lady Day material other than the second half of "I Cried for You". The trumpeter's arrangements for the unswinging string section is occasionally oppressive, sometimes border on muzak and tends to weigh down the music. The only bright spot are the five fine vocals by Jeanie Bryson, who wisely does not try to sound like Holiday and comes across quite well. Otherwise this is a disappointing outing.

For this double-disc set commemorating her American postage stamp, Verve compiled two discs of Billie Holiday covering the best of American popular song, from Ellington to Gershwin to Berlin to Porter and others. Though most of the material comes from the late '50s, when Holiday's voice was often in poor shape, her versions never fail to stir the heart - often because her voice was in such bad repair. All of the tracks are familiar standards, including light-hearted songs like "A Fine Romance," "Embraceable You," "Prelude to a Kiss" and "I Get a Kick Out of You" as well as darker fare like "But Not for Me," "Stormy Weather," "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)" and "I Got a Right to Sing the Blues." -- Review by John Bush --
