Summary: Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 film written by Simon Beaufoy and directed by Danny Boyle. The movie is about a young boy, Jamal Malik, who grew up in the slums and currently has a job serving tea to workers of a local call center. The whole movie takes place during an Indian version of the television game show of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’. To everyone’s surprise, Malik does extremely well, answering each and every question until he finally hits the one million dollar jackpot question, his final one. The show then stops there, and is announced to be continued as police interrogate young Jamal due to suspicions of cheating. It seems it was too hard for them to believe that a ‘street boy’, as they called it, like Jamal could have so much knowledge and be able to answer every question correctly. According to the television host, who taunted Jamal while the camera wasn’t on, doctors, lawyers and such professionals were the only people who would have the amount of knowledge to answer the questions, not someone from the streets who was living in poverty. The police continue to interrogate Jamal, and are convinced that he is lying. This causes them to act inhumanely towards Jamal as they begin to torture him by things such as electrocuting him with wires, beating him, until he “tells the truth”. Jamal has nothing to hide and he simply tells the truth, but the truth doesn’t seem to be what they want to hear. A police officer then brings out a recording of Jamals appearance on the television show, and pauses after every question, asking the young boy how he knew the answer to each question. Being the highly honest and forward person he is, he explains to them in full detail, each memory of his life that had caused him to know the answer to each question. He basically ends up telling the police officer his life story, about living in poverty, the death of his mother, never having a stable family, or even a place to live. Struggling to be safe, healthy and sustain himself and his brother, and later even a poor young girl in the same situation as them, Latika. Each scene shows the many struggles Jamal faced in his life being born into poverty, and he vividly explains each one and includes how it lead him to know the answer. He tells the story of how each day was different from the one before, each a new struggle and obstacle to face. He explains how the three of them were living on piles of garbage when an unfamiliar man comes, gives them each bottles of pop and tells them to come with him to his orphanage. Being young and naïve, they assumed he was a very good man, but it turns out he ran the orphanage to use these young children so they can beg and bring him back money. One day Jamals’ brother Salim decides to pull a quick one and grab his brother and Latika and run as he had scene the leader of the orphanage torture a young girl to make her blind, and was moving on to Jamal. They jump up on a train and as Jamal reaches out for Latika, unfortunately she doesn’t make it with them and is left behind. From then on Jamal lives a crazy life, based solely on pick pocketing, selling goods and faking to be tour guides for people at the Taj Mahal. Despite all that had changed he had always kept Latika in mind and never forgotten her. He tried his best to find her and when he finally did, she was being used as a prostitute who’s virginity was going to make her owner lots of money. Unfortunately, it didn’t last because they were separated again until years later when he ended up having to work serving tea at the call center. Jamal still never forgets Latika and finds her for the second time, this time only to find out she is married to the rich man, nearly 3 times her age who once owned her as a prostitute. At this time he is older and tells Latika to come be with him but she insists that he leave or else her husband might kill them both. He noticed though on the day he reunited with her she was watching the television game show which he learns that she watches a lot, so one day after losing touch with her again he appears on the show, hoping she would be watching, and that is when he does surprisingly well. He is stuck on the last question and decides to go through with it using his last lifeline and calling his brother, when to his surprise Latika answers…
She does not end up giving him an answer but he decides to guess and he guesses right. He then reunites with Latifa for the final time and end the movie with a kiss.

The topic I have chosen for my making connection project is poverty. The work I will be comparing it to is well know movie “ Slum dog millioner’. Before we start this essay we need to ask this question: what is poverty? Poverty is the state of being poor, not being able to provide you with basic needs such as food, water, housing, and education. In this movie, there were a lot of instances where we find connection to the poverty.
Jamal and his older brother both were born into poverty. They lost their mom when both
of them were in such a young age. Since they were living in poverty and had no one to support their needs, they had to stop going to school to get the right education. Living in third world country it’s very hard to get the proper education. Schools are cost fortune and many parents can not afford to pay for the education. Sometimes parents willing to spend their last money, for their children to go to school and get the education. Downhill children most likely would have to drop out of schools, just because parents can’t longer pay for the school needs such as : books, uniform, transportation, food.
In India there was no any kind of support from the government such: welfare, child support. In India there are more than half of the population is living in slums. Slum is area of the city where there are houses made up from the different materials, those houses don’t fall under the standard codes for housing. Those houses are very unsafe and unsecure. We can see in the movie Jamal and his brother, and many other children in the movie were living in this unhealthy environment. As I mentioned earlier they both lost their mom, they had no one to take care of them. There were no any agencies for the kids support. Jamal and his older brother ended up living in the streets. They would sleep in the trains that would take them to different random places. For them to survive them had to also steal food, and sometimes it required going through danger. In LDC children don’t have enough nutrition and vitamins, often the food is either not enough or lucks of nutrition component. In many countries children don’t eat for days , as we see in the movie. In order to get more food for the family often the children have to work for a small amount of food instead of money .Main character Jamal and his brother were working at the small restaurant selling bottles of water that they reused after each customer would be done . Since they had nowhere to go and no one to take care of them, they ended up living in landfill. From there on they were picked up by a “generous” person who was supposedly running a orphanage. Brothers and Latika felt like they were blessed because they found a shelter to live in and food to survive. This agency was mutilating talented children in order to get more petty for people and earn more money .Later on those talented kids would be on street begging for money, this situation often happens in a countries were there is no law to protect children.
In Lower Develop Countries food and shelter is not guarantied for the children. There are no laws to protect children..In many countries children are being abused by other people. As we witnessed in the movies, children were tortured and beaten by police, parents, and strangers and nobody stood up for them .In countries where poverty is not un issue, like develop countries children are valued and protected by human rights laws. For example in Canada we have laws that would protect children. Government in Canada gives child support for the families with a lower income. There are always options of subsidized housing. In India people concentrate for supporting them selves, such as having basis necessity. People are so concerned about getting the basis needs, and they don’t care about other rights as religious rights.

Jamal’s mom was killed because, she was Hindu, at that time and that place there were no religions right were respected.
