I like so much what he wrote, some books are very dark but so extremely intelligent, so perfectly describing what I feel sometimes. I find your country fascinating for many aspects, so big and so different from the rest. Well I studied it with a private teacher (cours de russe à Montreal) for one year and now I am on my own. I try to read and watch films. I've also had a russian girlfriend and went to russia 2 times. But it didn't work out.
To say the truth, I think that we learn a lot by discovering new cultures. When I traveled there I took the train and traveled 2-3 days in the same train and it was so fascinating to watch the little villages beside the railroad. So beautiful..

You know what I find surprising about Dostoevsky is that russian people told me that he is not so famous in Russia. I was told that Bulgakov (Master i Marguerita) is much more appreciated. I tried to read this book but there was too many cultural references and was lost most of the time. At least with Feodor D. his caracters are very much universal. And I like that. Crime et Chatiment, the main caracter is so interesting, you feel like beeing the person. Idiot as well.
Tolstoi is another one: Vaina i Mir. Did you read it ?

I have been to Tatarstan, Kazan i Naberezhny Chelny toje. I specially liked this place mostly because it was such a cultural change. Totaly unbelievable. I really envy you to know the whole country. One of my dream. I would like to see the Baikal Lake. Really do.
And the black sea as well. The area around the black sea is a rich part of Russia I heard. Some places are very rich and others very poor. Some things I didn't like so much in Russia was the corruption and the militzia, constantly looking after money. I hated that !
I like the cold ! And Northern Siberia, I would like to see that too. Another writer I like is Sojelitsine, writer about the goulags.

Interesting what you wrote about Dostoevsky's heroes. What do you think yourself, do we have to suffer, get privations, to finaly obtain harmony ? Very interesting discussion, in my case, I think I do, unfortunately. Maybe this is why I like the books so much.
Do not overestimate my level in russian. I would certainly not be able to read Dostoievsky in the original langage. Unfortunately :-(

However I have one book in russian: Idiot. Sometime I look at it and wonder if one day, I 'll be able to read it. I got it directly from Russia. A gift. (podarok)
Concerning the Militzia, yes indeed I was sometimes even frightened. Some of them seem even worse than an actual bandit. You just need to run away when you see them, but they are too many ! However, I have a great respect for Poutine. I think he is a very strong man, and he fits the role for a russian president. If he could be a little bit more democratic he would be perfect.
