In 1784, France's greatest magician, Duc De L'Isle, commisioned toymaker, Philip LeMerchand, to make a mechanical puzzle box to a "very specific request". Upon deliverace L'Isle then poured blood into a pentagram carved into the floor and uttered "Niktu Specular Suave" nine times. This caused the box to solve itself and opened a portal to hell that can now be accessed anytime that anyone solves the box.
It is believed the LeMarchand designed and created more than 270 boxes before his mysterious disappearance. These boxes change hands rapidly, as is expected, though there are a few collecters, who are interested in the boxes as objects of admiration, and have no interest in working their wonders.
The boxes, known in some circles as LeMarchand Boxes, were each one of a kind creations which were also puzzles, with the answer to one's ultimate hearts desire as their solution. Each box is unique for each person, a different puzzle requiring a different solution, a solution that is a ritual. It can never be easy to solve the box; it is something someone has to work at, and something someone has to want.
THE LAMENT CONFIGURATION
"The Box Of Sorrows"
[469x373]
LeMarchand's first and arguably most classic, puzzle construct. Its complexity was managed by expanding on the design of a similar box designed and constructed by Albertus Magnus in the thirteenth century. When operated properly, a pleasing melody issues from within which belies its true nature.

ACERBUS CONFIGURATION
"The Box of Divine Complexity"
[405x384]
Believed to require over 600 precise moves to open, the Acerbus Configuration is the most complex box ever to be created by LeMarchand. Most of the separate plates have their own specific movement, and the metal the plates are constructed from varies across its surface. Many are silver but some are largely osmium, a poisonous metal that can kill by absorption into the bloodstream through the skin.
ALBERTUS MAGNUS' Et Ad Daemones Ducit
"The Box of Gateways"
[436x392]
The "Box of Gateways" has defied all attempts to pin it to a historical date - it is white gold inlaid onto a black stained oak base and unusual in that it has no runes or text or other markings on its faces, just pure geomectric design.
THE TROUBLED WALK
"The Box of Grief"
"The Distress Configuration"
"LeMarchand's Companion"
[436x432]
Perhaps the greatest find of modern times, The Troubled Walk - "The Box of Grief", is reportedly the sister box to the now infamous "Lament Configuration - "The Box of Sorrows".
The Troubled Walk was thought only to be a rumor, until the book collection of Sir Francis Dashwood was sold at a private auction. It brought to light the only known copy of "LeMarchand's Dreams", a book which lists the early works that LeMarchand produced in Paris (1749).
The tome contains a section devoted to The Box of Grief. It states that the box was created at the same time and with the same materials as the Lament Configuration, but was never intended for sale.
THE DIVINER'S SECRET WINDOW
[436x300]
"For my dear Madame - a puzzle.
Solve the riddle of this eye,
and you shall be privy to the souls of all mankind.
The construct of this box was completed later in June of 1749, and delivered as a gift to Madame Chappieus, immediately preceding her mysterious disappearance from France. It is believed that LeMarchand had murdered 33 people by the completion of the Diviner's Secret Window.
ENIGME CONFIGURATION
"LeMarchand's Box of Gateways"
[436x327]
The Enigme Configuration is thought to have been created as a tribute to Albertus Magnus' Box of Gateways, and was made as a gift for American businessman and oil entrepreneur David Brown. Recent testing of the box's metal have found it to be platinum, with osmium largely present, giving the box a distinctive odor.
THE HOLLOW HEART
"The Heart of Empire"
[436x353]
This fourteenth puzzle of LeMarchand's is activated by arranging the numerous
surface plates in a manner similar to the arrangement of the streets of New York City in the time of its construction. It is said that George Washington, traveling through the Bronx, cried "Surely this is the seat of the empire!" originating the name, the Empire State.
JEREMIAD ENIGMA
"The Box Of Woes"
[436x353]
The Jeremiad Enigma. It is named after the weeping prophet of scripture...
The box was similar to the Lament Configuration from a distance. On closer examination it was evident that there were two large squares, one on either side ringed in a circuit of filigree. In opposition, two of the faces had representations of the moon waxing and waning with the sigils engraved on large discs surrounding them, while double bars like the latches of doors embraced the moon. The top and bottom panels bore the masonic eye resplendent.
MAGDALENE'S UNDOING
"The Regret Configuration"
[436x353]
This particular construct was crafted from the finest African ebony and inlaid with silver. Although recent research would suggest that it is in fact one of a pair (the other being ivory as a base and inlaid with osmium), an example has yet to be found and may be pure rumor. It is a widely held belief amongst LeMarchand scholars that “Magdalene’s Undoing“ was created in the latter part of the 18th century in New York.
THE PANDEMONIUM ARRANGEMENT
"The Keys to the Kingdom"
[436x353]
Philip LeMarchand presented his third commission to the Order of St. Salamanca, an illuminated brotherhood that provided sanctuary for him when he fled Paris. The Pandemonium Arrangement was said to be able to open and secure a gateway between Hell and Earth.
The Pandemonium Arrangement has turned up many times over the centuries. It surfaced in Russia, France, Germany, during the American Civil War, the burning of Atlanta, Indian massacres in the mid-west, and the Mexican revolution. Reports of the box seem to appear in every war where atrocities are committed in large numbers. In recent decades, the box has been linked with certain doomsday cults.
THE PYUS CONFIGURATION
"The Gift Configuration"
"Leviathan's Reward"
[436x353]
This is the only known configuration that was crafted, but not created by LeMarchand himself. The design was given to LeMarchand in manuscript form, and completed over a period of five years. It is suspected that Pyus opens a gateway to the world of men through which Leviathan itself can pass, effectively bringing about Hell on Earth and the destruction of all things.
THE THRENODY CONFIGURATION
"Mock Of The Infidel"
[436x353]
Although not as complex as the Lament Configuration, the Threnody Construct remains one of his most documented designs. References to its uniquely elegant configuration designs can be found in Pepin's Guide to Signs and Siguls ( New-Dawn Publications, 1996 ), Bolinger's Encyclopedia of the Occult ( Pinol Press, 1946 ), and the news article Children of the Vortex ( Pentacle, 1971 ).
