Встречай!

Этот холод – он не от температуры.
Что-то падает, едва различимое,
Но не снег, вряд ли даже дождь со снегом.
Это осколки стекла от новой телефонной будки,
Которое не продержалось и выходные.

Это срывающееся дыхание детей,
Которые клянчат монетку, а потом крадут всю вашу мелочь.
Это затихающий плач на заднем дворе,
Где продрогшие любовники находят свою смерть
От чего угодно, только не от холода. Это плод,

Сгнивший в каменном котле, его отвратительный запах.
Это траченный шепот кредитных карт.
На островке безопасности посреди шоссе плакат
С изображением двери туалета и с надписью
«Дерьмо». Я имею ввиду на самом плакате.

У киоска видео изможденная бомжиха
Спрашивает: Не видал моего приятеля? Нет – отвечаешь ты.
Она выкрикивает – Лгун! Это пропущенные новости:
Чужая жестокость, глобальное потепление,
За которым грядет новый ледниковый период.

Greet

It’s not about temperature, this cold.

There’s something falling, only just visible;

it’s not snow, hardly even sleet.

It’s the glass from the new phone box

That didn’t last the weekend.

It’s the torn breath of the children

who ask for a coin, then snatch your change.

It’s the fading cries from the back yard

where the lovers shiver and catch their deaths

of anything but cold. It’s the rotten fruit

in a stone jar, the smell of that.

It’s the spent whisper of credit cards.

By the traffic island there is a poster

showing a toilet door that someone

has marked with shit. The poster, I mean.

Outside the video shop, a pale stranger

asks, You seen my boyfriend? You say no.

She snaps back, Liar. It’s the ignored

news: distant violence, global warming

accelerating the schedule of ice.
