People do the strangest things.
Alan's decision to make some strange unofficial vow of silence isn't something completely unexpected. He is a weird kid. And the silence thing.... well there are monks and nuns all around the world who have been doing that kind of thing for years. Assuming that those sorts of people are among the most spiritual on earth, does this mean that Alan is striving towards some higher plane of existence, some higher understanding of the world and the people in it?
I don't believe that you can get a higher understanding of anything by mere obvservation. Observation can't explain thoughts and provide the insight that interaction can. I guess I don't understand it, it's not like I can call him and ask about it.
Reading his Xanga though.... it's like... uhhhhhh. Do you really have to shut up for a few days in order to notice things? Is that the only way you can see, really see, the world? I talk, but I notice plenty, but that could be just me.
I guess I'm just interested in how his experiment will turn out, if he'll learn anything. Not that I'd try it myself -- I'm not that kind of Gen. I don't need to be silent to listen or learn or know or see -- not just yet, anyway.
