From the San Francisco Wasp, March 31, 1882.
This rather viscious Keller cartoon, “The Modern Messiah,” appeared in the edition of The Wasp, published during Wilde’s stay in San Francisco. Many of the figures following Wilde’s steed are well-known members of San Francisco society who may have attended his first lecture at Platt’s Hall on March 27, 1882.
The cartoon’s sunflower motif was to represent the symbol of the esthetics movement; tied to the tail of the horse is a money bag that represented the $5000 fee he received for his American tour, and the padlock around the neck carries the likeness of Charles E. Locke, San Francisco impresario and theatre manager, responsible for Wilde’s lectures in the city.
