Matthias (Matthew) Buchinger had no arms or legs but had flippers growing from his shoulders. He was 29 inches tall. He was born in 1674 in Anspach, Germany and learned to write, draw portraits, thread a needle and play the dulcimer, a stringed folk instrument played with hammers. He juggled, performed magic and assembled ships in bottles. Buchinger moved to England in the 1700s, where he was known as Matthew and was exhibited as a conversation piece at parties. In his lifetime he was married four times and had a total of eleven children. He died in 1735.
