Coffee and Cigarettes.
This is a black-and-white feature film made of 11 short vignettes by James Jarmusch, which have been made through 18 years. The vignettes built on one another to create a cumulative effect. The genre of the film isn’t easily distinguished, I believe it’s something between the comedy and the drama – just like life itself.
The film is co-production and it was released by MGM Home Entertainment and Smokescreen Inc (an independent label of Jarmusch’s). It’s majorly in English, but sometimes you can hear French, as there are some French actors featured in the cast.
All of the 11 novellas are down-to-earth and true to life, they aren’t connected in the plot but the theme of whole film expressed in its name: everything is connected with coffee and cigarettes. The characters sit in some bars and have various conversations, which show us the misunderstanding and other problems of communication with the others.
The director – James Jarmusch is a legendary modern independent director. His work is almost brilliant: he has a very fascinating, fashionable and stylish manner. But your full and accurate attention is required, either the film may seem boring to you..
The photography’s done artistically: all the scenes are united by a chess-like design, close-ups help to understand the thoughts of the characters. There are several set positions of the cameras, which make the spectator feel involved.
There are many famous actors and musicians in the film like Alfred Molina, Steve Coogan, Bill Murray, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, The Wu-Tang Clan, Cate Blanchett they mostly play themselves there. All of the characters are interpretated true-to-life, may be because the actors were given as much freedom as possible.
The dialogues are half-improvised, which make them very real. Speaking predominates. Some vignettes are very psychological, though, with almost no words, and acting is important there. All the characteristic noises of the cafés are present in the film, and there is much music there, which doesn’t bore or disturb, but fills the gaps and adds fashion to the whole thing. The title track is presented by Iggy Pop.
The critics’ remarks about the film are positive, and many of them admire the film. One of the vignettes won The Golden Palm Branch several years ago. I share the critics’ admiration, the film is very original and it’s worth seeing, especially by coffee-drinkers and smokers. Though the film is no about these two things, it is actually about the nature of people’s communication. A very delicate and psychological exploration. I watched the film several times, and I still enjoy it much. Judging by my friends’ experience, it is one of the pictures, that leaves no one indifferent: either you don’t like it or it sticks to you and haunts you.
