Just got back from the movies. I'm not exactly a big fan of musicals, but I enjoyed this one. I've seen the Broadway version past winter; it was a spontaneous and sceptical decision, but it didn't disappoint me then. I still can remember that feeling of invigoration after the show.
When I was 7 or so, I used to pull out my mom's dusty ABBA records and dance to those catchy tunes. I've forgotten all about them till about 2 decades later...my feet were moving to the same tunes of my childhood and I wanted to sing out loud.
The movie version came out at a time of my life when I wanted to bring back those simple emotions and worry-free state of mind of my childhood. I just wanted to feel happy and joyful...and that's exactly what I got, because all the way through the show all I wanted was to sing, dance and be merry. The woman sitting next to me was singing and dancing, and I so wanted to give her a hug - I've felt that weird connectedness, that nostalgie over the good times...Well, Meryl Streep surprised me once again with her acting and singing abilities, what can you say, she is on of the very best. Amanda Seyfried was amazing...she portrayed Sophie so well, I'm sure she'll get plenty of new movie offers now. And I've always been a fan of Christine Baranski(since "Cybill" and "Birdcage"), she simply cracks me up, such a character. Very disappointed with Pierce Brosnan though...ahhh.

If you'd like some eye-candy and a bit of distraction from this life's worries, it's the movie to see - light and enticing.

I really don't appreciate musicals :) When we were in Vegas for our wedding, Dima's parents wanted to see Mamma Mia very much, or to be exact - Dima's mother did - she is from the Abba generation. But they did not want to go by themselves :) Oh, those parents :) But we were too busy with the wedding preparations, so Dima's brother and his wife had to take the parents to see the muscial. They weren't exactly thrilled about having to go :) But after the fact they actually said it wasn't bad at all. They just said there was surprisingly big amount of sexuality and sexual humor in it, so they felt a bit uncomfortable at times watching it with the parents. Well, even though they kind of liked it, I still don't wanna go :) In fact, even though we have been to NY 2 times, we haven't seen a single Broadway show still. Not our thing.

self-made, I know what you mean about the musicals...they've never been of interest to me. And now I don't mind.
I love Broadway, well...I love theatre. There is such a special energy in those places. And I try to go to to a show every time I'm in NYC. If I'm in Boston, it's Opera House, any other city - their repertoire theatre. It's my kind of thing. :)
As for Mamma Mia! - the whole plot doesn't make much sense, since it was build around ABBA songs, but who cares...it's a very upbeat show, and that's what I like about it. Yes, there was some "sexual humor", it's not that explicit though, the movie is PG-13.
I do realize that tastes differ though. :)

Elena_Prikhodko, I'm surprised that they've had it in Dubai...they've probably cut out some "sexually explicit" jokes; but then it wouldn't be the same. As for Meryl Streep, she's great no matter what role she plays, even though some critics were saying that it was her worst performance, but c'mon...it's a silly musical based on ABBA songs. But personally, I liked the play better than the movie version.

oh for sure they cut out all those xxx related jokes and scenes
but if you buy it on dvd sometimes they are fine........if its too many of those in the movie they simply wont release it in dubai in cinema :)
as for the show on the stage..........i bet they did cut out those and re made it especially for dubai public

CRAZY_VENUS, see, I really don't like theatre, I do not understand it. I don't feel the energy, the other way around - everything seems so fake and exaggerated to me. Too loud, too much make-up, too fake and unnatural. I just sense the fakeness too much in all people, and fakeness is the quality I cannot stand at all. Anywhere. So I prefer movies – there everything seems to be natural and realistic. Yes, I know that in movies they had a chance to redo each scene many times, but I don’t care – all I see is the end result. Dima’s brother’s wife Rachel is a writer, so she often goes to theatres here in Baltimore with her friends, and of course they have invited me a few times, but I had to say no, because it’s not my thing. I like visual art – paintings, sculptures, crafts – anything along those lines. So they invite me when they go to museums now and those invitations I gladly accept :)

self-made, ok, so THAT's what bugging you about theatrical performances. :) I guess if I looked at it from that point of view I would not liked it either. To me it's a play, a game that I watch with my own eyes rather than through the lense of the camera operator or someone else. I choose what I want to see and feel, and that's what I enjoy, every person sees it through their own prism of emotions, and I truly respect that. I love to watch people transform into different personalities and how well they excell in that, at that point some seem fake, some are quite natural...It's a game, once again...

Imigrantka, it's nothing great, but very upbeat and somewhat amusing. You might enjoy it.

CRAZY_VENUS, you're right - it's all about how you see it. And I like to play games in some ways, say, even in court it is a game to me, or just arguing sometimes for the sake of argument no matter what my real opinion on the subject matter is, but theatre is just too unnatural to me. I guess I am just overly sensetive to fakeness in anything... :)
