Q 18 : My Windows XP recognises my CD-RW drive as a normal CD drive. How do i let my Windows XP know it is a CD-RW drive? This might also be when your DVD drive is recognised as a normal CD drive.
ANSWER : This is probably when a program u installed or uninstalled changed the registry class of the drive. Meaning each type of drive has a different view class.
CD-R drive = type 1. CD-RW drive = type 2. DVD/CDROM drive = type 3.
To fix this, you will need to know what the registry is and how to change values. If you do not know what the registry is please do not attempt this. It can result in permanent damage to your windows installation. Make a backup of the key u are changing by exporting it first!
Start the registry by running “REGEDIT.EXE”. go to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives”
In the left pane click the folder under , where GUID is a 32-character hexadecimal globally unique identifier. (Note: there can be more than one if u have more than one cdrom drive installed). In the right pane, click the in the value enter the value that belongs to the drive (see above). (read more at microsoft Q316529)
