Respond to the following based on your reading.

In September of 1862, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This executive order freed slaves in states that were in rebellion against the United States. Consider what you have read in your online resources and answer the following questions:

  1. What reasons could Lincoln have for making such a move during the Civil War?
  2. Why didn’t Lincoln free slaves in all of the United States?

1Slavery was an outdated institution and unethical notion and Lincoln, perhaps, had moral reasons. Another reason might be that slaves supported economy, and their freedom would weaken Southern economy and war efforts
2 He thought that he needed them in certain territories; otherwise, they could had joined the opposing side.

Feedback

Possible Answers:

  1. Such a move could disrupt the Southern economy and way of life if slaves decided not to help the Confederate war effort or decided to rebel against their masters.

The Proclamation gave the North a moral reason to continue fighting the war—the end of slavery.
  1. Border states—slave states that stayed in the Union—might strongly object to freeing all slaves during the war. Such a move might convince more people to join the Confederacy.

Consider the following (the table percentages stand for the percentage of the US resources in the North and South):

Resources North South
Population 71% 29%
Railroad Mileage 71% 29%
Manufacturing Plants 86% 14%
Industrial Workers  92% 8%

Use the image to answer the following questions.

  1. In what ways would the population advantage in the North help the Union’s war efforts?
  2. How would the miles of railroad work against the Confederacy?
  3. What are important war-related factors not included on this chart?

1 Resources, people and ultimately the quantity of soldiers. Industrial workers could produce more weaponry
2 South had less mileage, and the railroad was in worse condition. It was interrupting the movement of resources.
3 weather and territory. Southerners were on their own land and knew it well and used that to their advantage. Resourcefulness. Southerners were very resourceful and adapted to the new situation fast.

Feedback

  1. More soldiers and more workers
  2. Other than shipping, railroads were the fastest way to travel in the time period. With fewer miles of railroad, Southern troops would have fewer options for fast travel to where they would be needed.
  3. Quality of troops or leadership, amount of money available, guns and gunpowder already available
