Robe à la Française, ca. 1770, French, silk:  1750-75  Robe a la francaiseRobe à la Française, 1740s : Women with coquettish airs were wearing robes à la française and robes à l'anglaise throughout the period between 1720 and 1780. The silhouette of the robe à la française, composed of a funnel-shaped bust feeding into wide rectangular skirts, allowed for expansive amounts of textiles with delicate decoration.:  1740  robe a la francaiseEngland, Great Britain (probably), 1740-1745, Silk, embroidered with coloured silk and silver thread. 'Court dress' was an exclusive and very ornate style of clothing worn by the aristocracy, the only people usually invited to attend at Court. The style of the robe is quite old-fashioned, and based on the 17th-century mantua. This ensemble recalls a garment worn by the Duchess of Queensbury in 1740.: 18th century 'open gown' - fabric woven about 1736-38, possibly in Spitalfields, London, the gown made about 1770-80.:  1736-38 London  ca. 1740s, British, Robe a la Francaise:  1740Gown, 1743-1750, brocaded silk taffeta. This wedding dress is one of the most outstanding garments in the McCord Museum’s collection. A rare piece, it is one of the few 18th-century silk gowns with a hand-painted floral design to be found in a North American museum. The soft cream silk was handwoven in China, where the floral pattern was handpainted in tones of lavender, blue, yellow, green and brown. This charming dress was worn by Mary Chaloner in Guiseborough, England, when she married.:  1763 Robe à la française France c.1765:  1765  FranceWoman's Jacket (caraco), ca. 1760, European, silk plain weave. "Caracos and other jackets like it were worn as informal dress in the 18th century. The caraco in particular emerged in the 1760s as a modification on the short gowns worn by working class women, but my guess is that they would subsequently have been adopted by the middle class as a more practical alternative to the longer gowns.":  1760Robe à la Française, 1765-70, British:  1765-70 robe a la francaiserobe a la francaise 1770 - 80:  1770-80 robe a la francaiseRobe à la française dressed à la polonaise, ca 1760-80 England, the Mint Museum:  1760-80 England1780s_Kyoto Costume Institute_ Chinese painted silk gown:  1770Woman's robe a la francaise, England, circa 1765. The hoop has changed from the square shape of earlier decades to a round profile. A stomacher is no longer needed, because the gown now meets in the front. The cream silk is adorned only at the edges with an embroidered band, ribbon and a stencilled fringe. This restraint in decoration illustrates the growing influence of the Neo-classical style in textile design.: Woman's Dress (Robe à l'anglaise) with Zone Front Artist/maker unknown, American?
