I actually loved the Cardassian look. I don't know what it is about it - maybe I find the reptilian look strangely sexy in a dangerous way, maybe the massive makeup served to hide some of the imperfections on the actors' faces (wrinkles, Alaimo's rough skin, Robinson's slightly doughy face) and made them look younger, or maybe it's about those strong ridged necks... ;) but all the actors who played Cardassians looked much better in full makeup than without it. Although Garak was too camp for my taste to be sexy, Robinson (who I was never attracted to in anything he was in) certainly looked better as Garak than in any other role; Biggs is not bad-looking in real life, but Cardassian makeup made him look more interesting compared to his more ordinary human face; and while Alaimo was also quite attractive with less makeup as a Bajoran (but not so much as a human cop in Far Beyond the Stars) he was incredibly sexy as Dukat in his real, Cardassian look.

At the Star Trek conventions he said that he wanted to retire. He didn't even realize, until a friend told him, that his union dues went towards a pension. When he contacted the union office and found out how much his pension was, he realized that it was enough for him to live off of and decided that he didn't need to work again.
He's spent his retirement doing the rare stage piece, the video game voice, and the upcoming Praetorian Issue (for TV). He spends a lot of his time going to conventions.
He's also losing his hearing - I met him and he asked me to speak louder because he had hearing problems. As well, on stage during a Q&A session at the conventions the other actors on stage with him would repeat back the questions for him because he usually couldn't hear them.
In real life he was a nice honest person who loved being an actor and enjoyed his profession. He was never rich but had a rich life and a rich career.

AH!.. well.. i suppose thats a better reason than people not wanting him in their movies or shows. i feel a little better.. i guess... however i do miss seeing him randomly in things. i get such a kick out of that sudden seizure of recognition and the unstoppable urge to scream "LOOK ITS DUKAT! MARC ALAIMO!" like a crazy person no matter where i am...
whats really crazy is that when i saw him(not at first but the 2nd or 3rd time) on DS9 i had a similar reaction when i suddenly realized he was the soldier from Total Recall.. even as a bit character hes quite memorable.

I met him in the late 90s at a convention. Nearly knocked him over at the bar! I found him very polite and happy to chat. I've got good memories of meeting him.
