MOTHER’S FANCY, 6″, Dark
Another 6″ block today. Mother’s Fancy is yet another Ladies Art Company block. I do seem drawn to them! It is one of the original patterns in print in 1895 (#140). It was also published as Mother’s Fancy Star by Hall in 1935, and as Evening Star by Oklahoma Farmer Stockman around 1930, according to Barbara Brackman.

ROAD TO OKLAHOMA, 3″, Dark
Ladies Art Company distributed this pattern in its original catalogues (c. 1895, #239). It was subsequently also published by Hall in 1935, the Kansas City Star in 1930, and the Needlecraft Supply Company around 1938.
Other, similar blocks also going by the name Road to Oklahoma are pieced by dividing the pattern into squares:

These “road” blocks were often set in groups of four. You can see, in this case, the creation of the secondary design of stars and chains:

AUTUMN FLURRIES, 3″ Dark
It’s the Autumnal Equinox today; the first day of Autumn, here in the Southern Hemisphere. Let’s celebrate with today’s block: Autumn Flurries. This is a block has been published twice by Nancy Page. The first time, as Autumn Flurries in the Birmingham News in 1940, then again in 1986, as Winged Arrows in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine; although she mentioned that the block was known as Winged Arrows in 1940.
There is a lovely Nancy Page quote in Jinny Beyer’s reference: “The wind is blowing all four ways at once and sending these leaves … scurrying and flurrying” (Beyer, p. 68).

BUTTERCUP, 3″ Dark
Welcome to Spring! What a wonderful time of year! To celebrate the change of seasons, today’s block is Buttercup. Try to work an exuberantly floral fabric into today’s endeavour!
This block is a modern simplification of the original pattern, published in the Kansas City Star in 1940:

I first came across the block in a workshop with Jackie Robinson in the 1990s when we did a quilt called How Does Your Garden Grow? from her Perennial Patchwork book. I suspect this is the Buttercup block’s first publication, as it is not mentioned by Beyer or Brackman.

I’m not sure where this block originated, but there are versions on the internet dating back at least 15 years. Enjoy.

LADIES’ WREATH 3″, Dark
Ladies’ Wreath was originally published in 1897 by the Ladies Art Company (#322).

DOUBLE X, 3″, Dark
Double X is pattern #4 in the original Ladies Art Company catalogue, so was in print from at least 1895. Carrie Hall kept the name Double X in her 1935 reference book, but it was called Wild Ducks when it was published by Needlecraft Supply c. 1938.
