This block is Right and Left, first published in Farm and Fireside, in 1884. Our block uses three colours, but it is more commonly coloured with two fabrics, in the orientation below, which makes the “right” and “left” more obvious:
Feel free to make it in whichever colour-way you prefer.
This block has also gone by the names: Thrift Block, also in noted in Farm and Fireside, in 1884; Sugar Bowl Quilt in the Rural New Yorker in 1932; Garden Path Patch in the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1933; and, Sugar Bowl again in when Nancy Cabot featured it in the Chicago Tribune in 1941.

The J & P Coats Company and the Clark Company, merged in the mid-19th century, have a long tradition of publishing pattern booklets and pamphlets. Any trip to the haberdashers will reveal that this tradition continues in earnest. Barbara Brackman tells us that around the time they merged, they took on the name “Spool Cotton”, and it’s under this imprint that today’s block, Whirlwind was first published in 1940.
Hopefully you can see why I did an unusual colouring for yesterday’s block!

Hidden Squares, and units like it, are components of many beautiful blocks. It’s so important to know how to make these units that today’s block is the subject of a tutorial.
The instructions below only contain the information specific to making this size block. Remember, the instructions on the daily blocks are brief summaries, and rely on mastery of the topics in the tutorials (find them under the front page menu).
Have fun!
