A nice old block, Utility Block was first published in the Ohio Farmer in 1896. Enjoy.

This has been one of my favourite’s for years! I discovered Ribbon Star, under the names Boxes, in Mary Ellen’s book when I first started patching … but didn’t have mitred corners in my bag of techniques. I made two cushion covers in this pattern … without the mitres. But now … you and I can do them.

According to Barbara Brackman, this is a Nancy Cabot block; although I have no further information.

Today’s block was originally called Cut Glass Dish by the Ladies Art Company, which had the pattern in print in at least 1895; but since we already have a pattern by that name, I’ve used the moniker given alongside the original by Carrie Hall in The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America, 1935, that is Winged Square. This name was later picked up by the Kansas City Star in 1937, and is now the mainstay. You may also have heard it referred to as: Prism Block, 1937, and Golden Gates. 1992.
It’s a great block for scraps, so feel free to make it in the colourway I’ve illustrated, in scraps, or the colourway illustrated by Barbara Brackman:
Or invent your own colouring!

Bird’s Nest is a pattern from Ruby McKim, first published in the Kansas City Star in 1929. Love this one, it has a bit of fiddling around, but looks great!
