Cut Glass Dish is the original name give to the Winged Square, which we made on May 17, which was originally published by the Ladies Art Company in 1897. The original pattern had the half-square triangles all facing in the same direction, whereas Winged Square reverses the colouring of the half-square triangles along the central axis. See the diagrams below.

Today’s block is a further variation on this theme, in which the central squares are replaced with four-patches. This variation is from EQ 7.

This block is from EQ7, and I have no idea from where they got it! Bonus if you can work it in pinks and creams. Enjoy.

Hello UK quilters! Today is the last day of the Chelsea Flower Show in London … so looks like I’ve missed it for yet another year. I’ll get there some day! Let’s have a garden themed block instead. Today’s block, Garden Maze is from the Kansas City Star, 1932.
I’ve found some old quilts to show you how the pattern looks when repeated:

Garden Maze was used extensively as a setting for other blocks. Here’s just one example:

A simple block with a nice secondary pattern, Eight Hands Around is yet another classic from the Ladies Art Company, 1897. According to Jinny Beyer it sometimes also gets called Eight Hands Round, but I’ve never heard of that one.

New Hour Glass is another pattern from Clara Stone’s Practical Needlework from 1906.

I love the movement in this block; it really does look like it’s rolling.
Rolling Pinwheel has two primary forms with the same name, but with different piecing regimes. Take a look at the drawings below. The version pieced with the large background triangles (blue) is a Ladies Art Company pattern from c. 1895; while the other version (red) is a Nancy Cabot pattern.
