Running stitch
Running stitch is the most basic method of creating individual stitches. These stitches are always moving forward while they are forming the patterns.
Stage 1. Cast on using the most suitable method for the area being worked with the chosen thickness of thread. If double running stitch is being worked, take care to use the back stitch method to cast on. Bring the needle up where the first stitch is to start.
Stage 2. Carefully run the needle forward along the grain of the fabric counting two threads of the linen before taking the needle through to the back. If using Aida as an alternative to linen, take the needle forward over one square.
Stage 3. The needle is then carried underneath the fabric over another two threads of the linen before it is brought back up to the front. The next stitch is then taken over two threads of the linen in the same way as the first stitch.
Stage 4. This alternating stitch action is then repeated along the length of the line or pattern being worked. This creates a dashed line.
