Ампир впитал в себя суровость стиля французской революции, не стал отказываться от атрибутики власти и прославления государя, зародившейся в античности и выпестованной французским классицизмом. Но зачастую предметы этого стиля выглядят неуравновешенно и
нелепо – аскетичные формы с нахлобученными пышными орнаментальными элементами. Египетская кампания Наполеона вносит свежую ноту в искусство Франции – женщины оборачиваются трофейными шалями с бахромой, а в мебели и посуде появляются практически реплики предметов, найденных в гробницах фараонов.
На ножках стульев располагают женские фигуры с изогнутыми крыльями, кресла встают на львиные лапы, на смену белому цвету классицизма приходят золотые колосья и пучки папируса на черном фоне.
