GRETCHEN, 6″, Light

This block received its name, Gretchen, in the Kansas City Star in 1932. It has also been known as A Feather Bone Block (Kansas City Star, 1950) and Old Maid’s Quilt (Oklahoma Farmer Stockman, nd).

Do we have any Gretchens in the group?

GIRL’S FAVOURITE, 6″, Light

Girl’s Favourite was given its name in 1938, in Needlecraft Supply’s booklet: Patchwork Quilts and How to Make Them. However, its original name was Square and Star, from the Ladies Art Company, c. 1895, and it was also published as Squares and Triangles in the Kansas City Star.

My ulterior motive for choosing this block for today is that it was my father’s birthday … and every ‘girl’s favourite’ is their Dad …

SALUTE TO THE COLOURS, 6″, Light

Today is the ‘Trooping of the Colours’ of the Queen’s Household Regiments in London to mark the Queen’s birthday. We are making the block, Salute to the Colors, for our own bit of pomp and ceremony!

Regimental flags of the British Army were historically described as ‘Colours’ because they displayed the uniform Colours and insignia worn by the soldiers of different units. The principal role of a regiment’s Colours was to provide a rallying point on the battlefield.

If Troops were to know what their Regiment’s Colours looked like, it was necessary to display them regularly. The way in which this was done was for young officers to march in between the ranks of troops formed up in lines with the Colours held high. This is the origin of the word ‘trooping’.

Nancy Page first published Mineral Wells in the Birmingham News, 1940. Although the original block was in just two colours, you may like to try colouring the centre Sawtooth Star …

WCT UNION, 6″, Light

[показать]

The WCTU (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) was formed in 1873 in New York by a group of women advocating the abolition of alcohol. They organised marches and demonstrations that eventually led to the prohibition of alcohol in many towns and cities. Their main fundraising vehicle was raffle quilts; hence, a number of patterns became associated with the WCTU, including Drunkard’s Path, and various tessellating “T” blocks (Smith, 2012).

Today’s block was probably first published in an article about the WCTU in Farm and Fireside, August 1, 1888; but was subsequently published by the Ladies Art Company (pattern #161) and would have been in print by 1897. Barbara Brackman also found it under the names: Montgomery (Hearth and Home) and Celestial Problem (Nancy Cabot, Chicago Tribune, 1935).

SUMMER WINDS, 6″, Light

Summer is here! Today is the summer solstice for us in the Southern Hemisphere.

To celebrate the return of summer, today’s block is Summer Winds. We don’t know anything much about this block, except that it is attributed to Nancy Page, as the pattern came from an andated and anattributed newspapaer clipping.

WINDBLOWN SQUARE, 6″, Light

Welcome to Winter. Today is the Winter solstice, so let’s bring in the colder weather with Windblown Square. Our simple but attractive little block was first named by Ruby McKim in 1931, then recycled by Nancy Cabot in the Chicago Tribune under the names Balkan Puzzle or Windblown Star (1933) and Flowing Ribbons (1935). It was also called Whirlpools by Nancy Page in the Birmingham News in 1935.
