Hello and Welcome to the tutorial of Peter Nagy
Hello and Welcome to my second tutorial called “Dock”.In this tutorial I applied brilliant brushes for smoke effects and some other methods to emphasize the special atmosphere.
In this story I wanted to show how a dock looked like at the turn of the century.I imagined foggy and smoky scene with lot of bricks and metal chimneys. Also, there is a little story presented about a thief who is right in the action of stealing something.
I defined a 20x20cm 300 dpi canvas. In during the first step I used only two layers: one for the background and one for the buildings. It was a simple brush filled sketch.
I started to paint the sky. I chose dark blue and purple brush with 80-90 percent opacity. The technique of creating the sky is similar to an impressionist painting technique: it is prepared with a small radius brush.
In my opinion there are two basic methods that we can use when we paint. The positive forms and the negative ones. One the positive form is when we simply draw with a brush and the other method is when we define a bigger patch and after that we erase the outline to fit the contour.
In this step I painted the roof. This roof is made of a kind of shiny steel board. So I painted it by high saturated light colors
I wanted to show that it wasn’t a dark night rather late sunset.I used dark tones except some warm unsaturated orange brushes. Also a painted the stars too.
I fined more details on the board and brick walls. Behind the buildings I painted some brick wall with chimneys
The windows are very kind for me. I started to paint a few warm orange lines onto the wall until it looked like a not properly rolled down shutter. This way the windows sheds the light out and the scene becomes much more lively
In this step I painted the wall a bit warmer and painted shades too. On the cables I reflected the colors of the sky.
In the ninth step I created one more layer for fog behind the buildings.Later I usually switched this layer to on and off.
I painted the fumes. It didn’t happen with a usual brush. A few years agoI found the most powerful brush set I’ve ever seen. This is the Barontieri brush set. http://www.barontieri.com/ I think this is excellent to paint fog, fume.
Here is my favorite brush from Barontieri.
I painted more windows and I wanted some basement windows, too. Actually it is a boiler room.
There is a very simple trick to create water. I duplicated all layers and then merged it to one layer. After that I flipped it and used hard edged eraser.Sometimes I transform this flipped layer also. I mean I scale it from 100 percent to 90percent.
In the new upper layer I painted the pier and erased the water layer a little bit and defined volumetric lights coming from the windows.
I thought the view of scene was a bit far away so I painted walls in the foreground.
Here I worked on the reflected colours of the moon.
To the volumetric light I used a huge brush in a new layer.
I painted the reflected warm colors of the cables and ropes and used some dodge tool to the brighter colors of the water and sky.
In this step I didn’t want planks so I illustrated it as a cobble.
Because the water is a bit warmer than the air in this scene I painted some billowing fog.
I used more bright lights for the reflection of the moon.
I hid the atmospheric layer, because I designed a small sailboat.
I built a little shanty with a chimney onto the boat. Also I illustrated some smoke.
I hide again a smoke layer and it helped me to paint the roof and the bright edges of the sailboat.
witched again to warm lights and painted the three little windows. Also erased the outlines of the docking and painted a jib boom.
To tell the truth I duplicated the sailboat and switched on the window lights layer.
I didn’t really like this composition so I cropped the canvas. I cut a bit from the foreground cobble. Also this is when the thief in the background dock appeared.
I wanted to have a cute animal in this scene; an animal that notices the thief.First I wanted a dog but at the end I decided to go with a striped cat. So I started to paint her and also panted the board.
This is a small step in cat painting. I painted the brighter legs and also used bright light to the board. Next I painted the shade of the cat too.
Here are the steps that I used.
I wanted to show my layers in this project. Usually I merged the most layer because the special layer styles and capacities.
