Scarecrow

Not-So-Scary Scarecrow:

Materials Needed:
Yarn in colors Brown, Blue, Gold, Beige and Yellow
Beads for eyes or embroider eyes
Your Imagination


Beginning with Feet and working up to Neck:


Foot (Make 2/ will be joined for body)
With brown (or with color of your choice) and using either the magic circle or the ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook method..


make 6 sc in 'ring'
Rnd 2: (Inc) twice, (Hdc-Inc) twice, (Inc) in last 2 sts = 12 sts
Rnd 3: (sc, Inc) twice, (3 Hdc-Inc) in nxt st, Hdc in ea of nxt 2 sts, (3 Hdc-Inc) in nxt st, (Inc, sc) twice = 20 sts
Rnd 4: sc in first st, Inc in next st, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, (3 sc) in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, (3 sc) in next st, sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in lst st = 26 sc
Rnd 5: BLO work round even = 26 sc
Rnd 6: sc in ea of nxt 7 sts, (Hdc-Dec) twice, Hdc in ea of nxt 4 sts, (Hdc-Dec) twice, sc in remaining 7 sts = 22 sts
Rnd 7: sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Dec over nxt 2 sts, (Hdc-Dec) 4 times, Dec over nxt 2 sts, sc in remaining 5 sts = 16 sts
Rnd 8: sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, (Dec) 4 times, sc in remaining 4 sts = 12


Change color to blue (or color using for overalls)


Rnd 9: (Dec) twice, (Hdc-Dec) 3 times, (Dec) = 6 sts
Rnd 10: sc, Inc in nxt st, Hdc in nxt st, Hdc-Inc in nxt st, sc in nxt st, Inc in lst st = 9 sts
Rnd 11: (Inc, 2 sc) 3 times = 12 sc /Finish off

For Body continuing with Blue: Join in center of back of foot.

Rnd 12: sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, join w/ foot 2 and sc in ea of nxt 12 sts, join to foot 1 and sc in remaining 9 sts = 24 sc
Rnd 13: sc in first st, (Dec nxt 2 sc tog) twice, sc in ea of next 8 sts, (Dec nxt 2 sc tog) twice, sc in ea of remain 7 sts = 20 sc
Rnd 14: sc in first st, Dec nxt 2 sc tog, sc in ea of nxt 8 sts, Dec nxt 2 sc tog, sc in ea of remaining 7 sts = 18 sc
Rnd 15: sc in first st, hdc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 8 sts, hdc in nxt st, sc in ea of remaining 7 sts = 18 sts

Color Change: Next row will begin shirt - pick any contrasting color for shirt.


Rnd 16: in BLO, work evenly = 18 sc
Rnd 17: (sc, Dec) 6 times = 12 sc
Rnds 18-20: work even = 12 sc
Rnd 21: (Dec) 6 times = 6
finish off.


Overalls: (working in Front Loops of Rnd 15)


Rnd(s) 16-17: sc in ea st around = 18 sc
Rnd 19: Dec, sc in ea of nxt 14 sts, Dec = 16 sc
Rnd 20: sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, (sl st in nxt st) twice, sc in nxt st, hdc in ea of nxt 4 sts, (sl st in nxt st) twice, sc in nxt st, hdc in ea of nxt 2 sts, sc in lst st
Rnd 21: (sl st) 4 times, sc in same space as sl st of previous rnd, sc in nxt st, ch 1, turn


begin working ROWS:
Row 22: Dec over 2 sc just made, ch 1, turn
Row(s) 23-27: sc, ch 1 turn
at the end of Row 27 make sure that flap meets back of overalls - if yes, finish off and leave enough tail for sewing.


** for second overall flap; sl st in same st as last sc on Rnd 21, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts - follow same instructions for first flap (rows 22-27)



Arms (Make 2):
With straw color, begin with hand:

make 6 sc in 'ring'
Rnd 2: (Inc, sc) 3 times = 9 sc
Rnd 3: work even = 9 sc
Rnd 4: (Dec, sc) = 6 sc
Changing to shirt color
Rnd 5: BLO, work even = 6 sc
Rnd 6: (Inc, sc) 3 times = 9 sc
Rnd 7-9: work even = 9 sc
Rnd 10: (Dec, sc) = 6 sc

finish off and leave tail for sewing to body


Head: (starting at top of head)


make 6 sc in 'ring'
Rnd 2: (Inc) 6 times = 12 sc
Rnd 3: (Inc, sc) 6 times = 18 sc
Rnd 4: (Inc, 2 sc) 6 times = 24 sc (if using a 'hair' color end here)
Rnd 5: (Inc, 3 sc) 6 times = 30 sc
Rnd 6-8: work even = 30 sc
Rnd 9: (Dec, 3 sc) 6 times = 24 sc
Rnd 10: work even= 24 sc
Rnd 11: (Dec, 2 sc) 6 times = 18 sc

Hat:
make 5 sc in 'ring'
Rnd 2: Inc in first st, sc in ea of remaining 4 = 6 sc

Rnd 5: (Inc, 2 sc) 3 times = 12 sc

Rnd 9: (Hdc-Inc, 3 Hdc) 6 times = 30 hdc

Finish off and weave in end or use to secure hat to head.


Using photo, assemble your scarecrow. Embellish with scraps of yarn, felt, plaid - whatever you have handy. Use embroidery floss to give your scarecrow some 'loose straws'.


For Hay Fork, with brown, I chained 26, then slip stitched through 25 and finished off. For Metal, I used gray and chained 21 and slipped stitch back through 20 around a thin metal wire (to help shape) then glued the middle prong (ch 7, sl st 6) to the center.
