Today was a typical day in the life of a teacher. I had the responsibility of coordinating the anchoring during the Sports Meet at our university. Four students were assigned to assist me: two for the inaugural session and two for the valedictory session. The selection of students was made by higher authorities, so as a communication teacher, I didn't have the opportunity to choose the most suitable candidates.
One of the authorities suggested calling a previous year student who had experience managing the event. Personally, I wasn't fond of this girl as she tended to be lazy, although quite talkative and impressive due to her communication skills. Despite my reservations, I knew I had to follow instructions rather than let my emotions guide me. She arrived and provided some guidance, but the bulk of the work, including preparing the script, fell on me.
The event went smoothly overall. First-year students followed the script well and asked relevant questions, demonstrating their logical thinking. However, the promoted girl failed to notice an error in the script – "on filled" instead of "on field" – which I corrected during her anchoring.
Everything was going well until the students announced the anthem. There was silence as the anchorers and organizers waited for the tune to begin. I was also unaware, expecting the anthem to be played. Eventually, the crowd started singing, and the situation was resolved.
After the event, I praised the students for their efforts, especially considering it was their first time anchoring. I sought feedback from at least five faculty members, all of whom appreciated the students' efforts, which made me happy.
However, in the afternoon, our Event In-charge expressed dissatisfaction with the efficiency of the students and insisted on having the experienced girl anchor the valedictory session. I was initially upset because I believed the students had worked hard and deserved recognition. Additionally, I felt that the real message was directed at me. Moreover, I wasn't convinced that the experienced girl was the best choice. I believe all capable students should be given the opportunity to practice anchoring and showcase their skills, rather than favoring just one student. Despite my frustrations, I remain composed and have shared my concerns here.
