Jogging in the forest

- Hey! Jack, what are you doing?
Jack was sitting at his brown wooden desk and doing boring exercises in his green notebook. He lifted up his eyes and saw his teacher and the whole class staring at him. Then he moved his look into his notebook and found a long line instead of the last sentence.
- Jack! You flied in the skies again, didn’t you? – jeered his teacher, - Jack, honey… this repeats already two months, you know. And I… I think now I have to invite your parents, Jack.
- But Ms Smith…
- Silence! – Ms Smith became angry, - Tell your parents I’m waiting them tomorrow at 5 pm. Class, you are free now. See you tomorrow. And your parents, too, Jack.
A short laugh passed along the class.
Jack was totally humbled. It was unfair! He wasn’t flying in the skies at the lesson, he was just thinking about how to build a spaceship. But nobody at school shared his ideas and his classmates called him a “fool” instead of understanding. Miserable and upset, he dragged his feet towards his house, which was on the other side of the town.
Jack lived in a two-floor country house, surrounded by a pretty white wooden fence. Outside the house there was a garden, where Jack’s mother collected a wide variety of plants, from strawberries to palms. She was crazy about plants. In the centre of the garden there was a pool. In front of the house there was a door of a garage, where was a red minivan.
- Mum, I’m home! – Jack entered and started the way up to his room.
- How was the day at school, Jack? – mother’s voice came from the kitchen, where she was cooking something very tasty.
- Awful… - was the answer.
- What happened again, my dear? – Jack’s mother was in good mood.
- Well, I’m afraid I’ll make you upset, too.
- Nothing can change my mood – a very pretty plant is coming from New Guinea! – saying this, Mum threw up her hands like a young girl that just got her first “five” at school. But Jack was too tired to share Mum’s gladness.
- Well, Ms Smith wants you to school tomorrow… - it was a very dangerous moment.
- Oh, I don’t think my son could do something serious. Don’t worry about it, Jack.
- Phew – said Jack very quietly.
Jack reached his room. The room was in a mess. Jack was “old enough”, so his parents didn’t even look in.
Jack got a shower, changed his clothes and went down to have dinner. Mum was finishing serving her special pasta with chicken. Jack noticed that there were only two plates.
- Mum, where are girls?
- Sue and Maggie are at the performance at their kindergarten and it will finish at 7.
John thought about how his sisters are lucky to not study at school. Mum turned on TV.
- “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Today we have some very important news in a politic world…” – click – “Oh, my dear, this ring is for you…” – click – “A strange object is going to fall on the Earth…” – click – “Today we are going to cook an apple pie, children…” – click – “And now I’ll kill you, ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaa!!!” – click – “And this object will fall somewhere near Kampton…”
- I think this program is not as annoying as others, – Mum finished clicking.
-“…scientists know nothing about this object…” – continued the TV.
- Interesting. They mean this thing is going to fall somewhere here? It’s impossible. – Jack finished with the meal.
-“…we have some characteristics of this object – it is very small, so if it is just an asteroid, it would burn in the air. Its size is like a size of a huge bus, no more. How we said, it is going to enter the atmosphere above Kampton. And will happened approximately at…” – click.
Jack turned off the TV.
- Mum, your meal was perfect as always. I’ll go, OK?
- Of course you may go. I’m going to cook jelly when our girls will come, so I’ll call you then.
- Oh, Mum, I love you. – Fruit jelly was Jack’s favorite dessert.
Jack got into his room, tidied it a bit, opened his bag and started doing homework. It was an activity that nobody likes to do, but everyone has to. Jack turned on his player. He enjoyed doing algebra listening to rock. He was finishing with algebra when suddenly music stopped for a few seconds. And just after then Jack heard a huge explosion very far from him. He putted off his headphones and looked out of the window. He saw a white line that crossed the sky. “Johnsons are trying their new rocket,” – thought Jack. He was too tired to imagine something more exotic. He finished his homework and without waiting Mum’s jelly went to bed. “It’ll be a very interesting day tomorrow,” – said Jack interiorly.
