There are many theories about the source of the word abracadabra but it's likely derived from the gnostic term Abraxas the name of the supreme deity which the Gnostics used to call a power.

The late Greco-roman world linked with both Gnostic beliefs and magical practices by the early church fathers as a cure for fevers and inflammations.

The first known mention of the word abracadabra was in the second century A.D. Abracadabra was written on eleven lines in the form of inverted pyramid amulet with one less letter on each line.

Supposedly as letters disappeared so did the patient's desease or trouble.
Through the years abracadabra gradually loss its religious significance and its meaning was extended to cover any hocus-pocus.
