Wiesbaden Altstadt - the Old Town



Altstadt is the heart of the city center of Wiesbaden. It is very beautful with hilly pedestrian streets, squares and boulevards. Schlossplatz, Marktplatz and Mauritisplatz are 3 squares very close to each other. With its church and beautiful palaces this area is the very heart.

Marktkirche (Market Church) is the landmark of Wiesbaden's city center and the city's tallest building. Its western steeple is 92m high. Marktkirche is a protestant neo-Gothic church, built in red granite.

Neues Rathaus, the neo-renaissance New City Hall was completed in 1887. It was designed by by Georg von Hauberisser, who also designed the Munich New City Hall.

It was damaged badly during the WWII and rebuilt later without its dominating main pediment.

Hessischer Landtag, Hesse's parliament building, is a former ducal palace. Wiesbaden is the capital of Hesse, the federal state where also Frankfurt lies.

Alte Rathuas, the Old Town Hall from 1610 is the city's oldest preserved building. It is now a civil registry office. It has a vine cellar.

St Bonifatius kirche. The first church for the catholic community was built from 1845-49 by Philipp Hoffmann in Gothic Revival style.

In the middle of the square Luisenplatz is the Waterloo Obelisk, commemorating the Nassauers who died in the wars against Napoleon.

The parks and the area around the Kurhaus (city center)



Wiesbaden, literrally means "meadow baths" is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, it has 15 hot springs today. It has a long history, the first spas were

documented by the romans. The northeast part of the center is very hilly, that is where the Kurhaus spa, casino and the theater is, located between 2 very

beautiful parks, Warmer Damm and Kurpark. There are lakes, beautiful trees blossom in spring, nice mansions nearby and couples getting married in Kurpark.

Parkstrasse is a green, curvy, hilly road above Kurpark.

Kurhaus. It was built at the request of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1904-07. It has a famous casino (Spielbank).

Sonnenberger Strasse is the hilly street that is parallel with Kurpark. It has beautiful trees and nice hotels and mansions, many of them white.

HERBERT GARDENS AND THE AREA AROUND THE STATION



This page is about the area around the railway station and the beautiful parks Herbert Gardens and Reisinger-Brunnen Gardens in the south part of the

city center. Many modern federal administrative buildings are located here. This is the area I first came to when arriving by train from Frankfurt.
