Well, before arriving at the hostel I got lost in Petrzalka, on the other side of the Danube from the old city. This neighborhood is a sea of commie-block and it was very hard to find our way out since we couldn’t find any street-names and since all the buildings looked the same:
[показать]
[показать]
Finally found our way to the city-center, we are going towards the futuristic-looking (well, at least once it was futuristic) Novy Most bridge:
[показать]
[показать]
Bratislava has a street-car system. Notice the lack of car traffic, whether it’s in the city center or outside of it:
[показать]
Now photos of the quain old city-center:
[показать]
[показать]
The St. Michael’s gate, once an entrance to the walled city:
[показать]
The Hlavne Nam:
[показать]
A street artist imitating the statue next to him:
[показать]
The Slovak National Theatre:
[показать]
The Hviezdoslavovo Nam is a very long plaza, that was probably created once the the canal surrounding the city’s wall were filled with hearth:
[показать]
A modern structure in the city center:
[показать]
A view of the Danube river from the Novy Most:
[показать]
St. Martin’s Cathedral. This is the church where Hungarian Kings were crowned for many centuries. In fact Bratislava had a large Hungarian as well as Germanic community in the past:
[показать]
The streets around St. Martin’s Cathedral:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
The Grassalkovich Palace (the palace of the president):
[показать]
The contrast between old and new street:
Old:
[показать]
New:
[показать]
The view from the hostel (again, notice the contrast between the foreground and the background buildings):
[показать]
[показать]
The Kamenne Nam:
[показать]
The red roofs of Bratislava from the tower of the Old City Hall (I suggest the visit of the municipal museum: nice exhibits, interesting interiors, and the view from this tower is superb):
[показать]
[показать]
From the castle looking towards the old city:
[показать]
[показать]
Looking towards the sea of commie-blocks in Petrzalka:
[показать]
[показать]
From the castle looking towards Austria (all the windmills are already in Austria):
[показать]
[показать]
The New Bridge with a restauration UFO on the top. The bridge is unique because it is the longest suspension bridge in the world with only one pillar!
[показать]
This is the Dóm Sv. Martina or Cathedral of Saint Martin, the place of coronation of kings of the Kingdom of Hungary.
[показать]
[показать]
Behind the Cathedral is a street where the church organisations are(Malthesian Knights, Charities etc):
[показать]
In the background you can see a gothic tower of the Saint Clare's Monastery.
I think that this building is the property of the church and they have no money for reconstruction, so instead of renting it with an agreement for reconstruction, they rather let it decay, like they do with many other buildinngs in Slovakia:
[показать]
Now comes the view from under the New Bridge:
[показать]
The Old Bridge, built in the 19th century, formely named The Bridge of Frantz Joseph, then destroyed by the Nazis during the retreat and rebuilt by the Red Army. In the background there is a new shopping center, Eurovea:
[показать]
A view of Bratislava from the Old Bridge:
[показать]
The Old Bridge, lookin to the Petržalka district, the most dense and most populated town/city district in Slovakia, on the area of 69km2 live over 120,000 citizens:
[показать]
View from the Apollo Bridge, on the right is the shopping center of Eurovea:
[показать]
OK, so Lets move to the Old Town, the historical center of Bratislava.
Firstly, we have here a church of Jesuits:
[показать]
Then the Castle at night:
[показать]
Austria Trend Hotel, a hotel a few meters from the Hodžovo Square, the place where the Presidential Palace is:
[показать]
And a nightlife of the Christmas time in the streets of Bratislava:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
On the last photo is the Michael's Gate, one of the city gates, the other were demolished or destroyed

I think the man, or woman, responsible for this is Maria Theresia, who gave orders to demolish the city walls, but the time and the socialist era took its part.
[показать]
A bridge over the former water jump:
[показать]
Nowadays, there is a nice garden.
The Main Square with the tower of the Old Townhall and the Christmas Market:
[показать]
[показать]
The other side of the square:
[показать]
[показать]
And now some daytime photos:
The Klariská Street:
[показать]
IDK what the name of the street is, but it is the street where the Čumil statue is, the parallel street to the Hviezdoslavovo Square, where the Opera House(Old Building of Slovak National Theatre) is. There is the British consulate on the street.
[показать]
A church, IDK what it is, but it is right next to the Jesuits Church
[показать]
The Presidentual Palace:
[показать]
A saint:
[показать]
Michael's Gate:
[показать]
A gothic monastery on the Main Square:
[показать]
A narrow street between the city walls(former), next to the Michael's Gate:
[показать]
[показать]
Atlas, bearing the weigth of the world on his shoulders:
[показать]
Opera House:
[показать]
Bratislava is known for its statues and urban legends around them, we have the Napoleon Soldier statue on th Main Square, a Paparazzi, Schöne Nazi and Čumil(Voyeur):
[показать]
It was a man that instead of working he sat and watched young ladies walking by and smiled on them.
[показать]
this is Schöne Nazi, a real man who was walking down the Corso and was very kind, he lived around the 70s.
[показать]
A Napoleonic Soldier who stayed in Bratislava for a girl and his army left him behind.
And the Paparazzi, a custom statue made for the Paparazzi Bar:
[показать]
[показать]
I wish there were more bars like thin in Slovakia, who do care not only about the bar, but about the building as well.
The Primacial or Primate's Palace(primate was the prime bishop), it was the residence of Hungar bishops, in 1805 the fourth Peace of Pressburg between Austria and France was signed here after the famous napoleonic Battle of Austerlitz, then it was the place where the opening sessions of Hungarian Diet took place amd the April/March Laws were signed here as well.
[показать]
The tower og the Old Town Hall.
[показать]
The Good Shepherd's, the narrowest house in the world in the past:
[показать]
[показать]
A statue of somebody on the Castle:
[показать]
The Castle:
[показать]
with the statue of Svätopluk, the king(although it is questionable if he really had the title of Rex) of the Great Moravia.
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
And some photos from the Castle:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
And, last but not least, Bratislava Skyline from the Castle:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
On the left you can see the Slavín, a memorial of soldiers of the Red Army that gave their lifes for Bratislava's freedom.
[показать]
Now the view of the Main Train Station.
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
Acibishop's palace.
[показать]
[показать]
In the background you can see Petržalka and the windfarm in Austria.
[показать]
In the background is the Slovnaft Refinery.
[показать]
The Apollo Buisness Center and the Trinity project under construction(nowadays the Trinity I is completed and they are working on the cladding and building Trinity II, they are around the 14th floor. As the name suggests, the Trinity will be a cluster of highrises containing three buildings)
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
A model of the National Bank of Slovakia(NBS):
[показать]
The atrium of NBS:
[показать]
And the exterior:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
Right next to the SNB is the building of Slovak Radio, a building built in 70s and unique for its shape of a upside-down pyramid:
[показать]
Not far from the NBS is the building of the City Buisness Center with the building of VUB Bank Tower:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
When talking about the buisness centers, we must not forget to mention the Apollo Buisness Center, named after a refinery, bombed during the WWII that stood on its place and provided work for many citizens of Bratislava, because of what many citizens died during the bombing.
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
Not far away from the ABC is the Tower 115 or J&T Tower, the tallest inspired building in Slovakia(if the antenna/spire counts).
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
When talking about highrises, the Three Towers are quite popular:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
And Lakeside Park
[показать]
[показать]
And Polus City Center:
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
Now let's take a look on Eurovea Galleria, a new shopping center on the riverfront.
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
[показать]
The last one is a statue of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, a slovak astronomer, minister of war, metheorologist, pilot and general of French Air Force.
And the last dominant of Bratislava I will show you, The Apollo Bridge.
Built in an unique way, constructed in a drydock and transported to its place by boats.
