General Comment. This photograph shows the M.C. Perry memorial as it was on dedication day (July 14, 1901) as viewed looking across the beach. Point Rubicon is seen in the far left background and the monument is in the far right background.

An expedition artist, W. Heine, painted this location from the same perspective in 1854. His painting was subsequently reproduced as a small lithograph in Volume 1 of the narrative of the expedition and as large lithograph published in 1856. The large lithograph was titled First Landing of Americans in Japan, Under Commodore M. C. Perry at Gore-Hama July 14th 1853. The scene of Americans first landing in Japan was also reproduced in the September 1892 issue of the Japanese monthly illustrated periodical, Fuzoku Gaho.

Comparing the three images demonstrates how precisely the monument was placed and shows how accurately Heine rendered the scene in his 1853 painting.
