LEGENDS OF THE FAMOUS PLACES IN EDO

Ferry Boat of Armor
Yoroi no Watashi
Minamoto no Yoshiie and his army were crossing a sea channel on the way to the battle field. A sudden storm was about to wreck their boats. Yoshiie threw his armor into the sea and prayed to the dragon king. The storm subsided. They could reach the opposite seashore safely. Ever since, the place was called, "Yoroi no Watashi" (Ferry Boat of Armor).

Memorial Catalogue - 30 prints
Strange - 36 prints stated in the Catalogue but 30 in the body of Chapter VII.
Hiroshige (Albuquerque Museum, 1983) - 36 prints. They had only 9 prints in their exhibition (701 to 709) and show 2 prints not seen here. They list two editions - Dansendo (Ibasen) in 1848 and Yamaguchi-ya (Tobei) in 1858.
Sotheby's Sale Catalogue (November 1985) - The sale of the Salvatore J. Tarantino collection lists a set of 36 prints from 1858 (Lot 110).
Odawara City Pages contains a complete set of 30 prints from 1847. (AltaVista BabelFish Translation)

The above series was acquired by this website as 30 prints and have been ordered according to the set presented on the Odawara City Pages.

Another print that appears to be from the series found on the web.

Thanks to Clarence Bodine at the East/West Gallery for further information. The gallery bought Lot 110 of the Sotheby's Tarantino sale and the reason that 36 were listed is that Tarantino had duplicates of some of the prints. The gallery still has ten or so prints left and a couple of hundred other original prints of Hiroshige, Yoshitoshi, Toyokuni III, Kuniyoshi, Yoshida etc..
