Italian men traditionally request a woman’s hand in marriage from her father. Once permission is given the couple is free to get engaged. Prospective brides then get to work readying their trousseau or hope chest. This may contain household items, clothing, silverware and some money gifted by the family.

Weddings are solemn affairs and take place usually in a church. It is forbidden to perform a marriage during lent or the advent. The month of May is set aside for the worship of the Virgin Mary and august is believed to be unlucky for the married couple. Sundays are believed to be particularly auspicious for weddings.

On the day of the wedding a large bow is tied above the doorway of the Catholic Church. the groom carries a piece of iron in his pocket to ward off the evil eye while the bride does her best to tear her veil as this brings good luck. At the conclusion of the ceremony a wine glass is broken by the couple. This is a way to find out how many years of marital bliss they are destined to enjoy.

The newly married couple is showered with paper confetti and rice as they exit the church. A pair of doves is released into the air, symbolizing love and happiness. Candy coated almonds, nuts and grains are also tossed as a symbol of fertility. The wedding is followed by a reception which features enough food and wine to give the entire wedding party digestive disorders.
