Theatre of Tragedy (ToT) started out as a Death Metal act complete with angelic female vocals and grunting male vocals; better known as the beauty and the beast effect. However, over time, this band from Norway has continued to evolve. They have gone from Death Metal to Gothic Metal to Industrial Metal, and after hearing their new album with new female vocalist, Nell from The Crest, they are going back to a more Gothic sound.
Their evolution back to Gothic soundscapes may be due to the abrupt departure of Liv Kristine, who was with the band since the very beginning. Liv has gone on to start a new band with her husband, Alexander Krull of Atrocity, called Leaves' Eyes, who is an outstanding Gothic Metal band.
ToT's new album is not a complete departure from their albums of late; however, the songs have less of a Industrial feel to them, but don't take my word for it, go grab this album and check it out for yourself.
