Kennedy Center to Honor

A pair of Oscar-winning performers, Barbra Streisand and Morgan Freeman, join the choreographer Twyla Tharp, the country singer George Jones and two members of the British rock group the Who, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, in receiving this year’s honors for lifetime achievement in the performing arts from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, officials announced on Tuesday afternoon.

“With their extraordinary genius and tenacity, the 2008 honorees have redefined the way we see, hear and feel the performing arts,” said Stephen A. Schwarzman, the Kennedy Center chairman, in a statement that accompanied the announcement. For 31 years the honors have been given for contributions to American culture in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures and television. Past honorees include Lucille Ball, Bob Dylan, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Helen Hayes, Bill Cosby and Carol Burnett.
