Benjamin Paterssen родился в 1750 году в Varberg, Швеция. Занимался в студии Goteborg художника S. Frick. В 1770 годах путешествовал по Польше, Литве и Латвии. В 1787 он приехал в Санкт-Петербург, где жил до конца своих дней.
Патерссен работал как в портретной, так и в жанровой живописи. Но наибольшую известность приобрели его пейзажи и городские мотивы. На его счету около 100 картин Санкт-Петербурга.
В 1798 году он становится членом Стокгольмской Академии Искусств.
Умер художник в 1815 году в Санкт-Петербурге.
