Leading Sotheby's Asia Week sales was an Imperial Jade 'Ba zheng mao nian zhi bao' Seal from the Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period from a Private New York Collection that more than doubled its high estimate, achieving $3.5 million in the Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art sale.
The Qianlong emperor often had seals made to mark significant events in his life and this important lot was one of the seals made to commemorate his eightieth birthday in 1790. Surmounted by a pair of dragons, the square seal is deeply and crisply carved with the characters Ba zheng mao nian zhi bao, which means treasure of concern over phenomenon at eighty. |
