Day 1- Depart USA
Overnight flight to Rome.
Day 2 - Arrive Rome (2 nights)
Trafalgar greets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to begin your exploration of the 'Eternal City'. This evening, a warm welcome from your Tour Director at our included Welcome Dinner with wine. (Welcome Dinner)
Day 3 - Rome sightseeing and at leisure
Our guided sightseeing tour includes a visit of the Sistine Chapel inside the Vatican Museums as well as the Basilica of St Peter. We then continue to Piazza Venezia, where we have time to take pictures of the Victor Emmanuel monument – otherwise known as the Wedding Cake – and the 15th century Palazzo Venezia. Then along the Via Sacra to the Roman Forum and the breathtaking Colosseum before we pause to admire the Circus Maximus overlooked by the Palatine Hill. Later, you’ll have the opportunity to maybe explore the ancient Catacombs on the old Appian Way. Or perhaps, shop in the designer boutiques along the elegant Via Condotti. (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 4 - Rome - Assisi - Venice (Island) (2 nights)
We travel north into the Umbrian hills to Assisi, atop Mount Subasio. Home and burial place of the much loved St Francis, we visit the Basilica which contains the famous Giotto frescoes, depicting the life of the beloved Saint, and have time to admire the views over the peaceful scenery from this medieval walled town. Then a picturesque drive through tobacco fields, vineyards and olive groves brings us to magical Venice for our two-night stay. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 5 - Venice sightseeing and at leisure
The perfect way to absorb this city's unique sights and sounds is on an included canal cruise to St. Mark's Square. We will see the Byzantine Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs and the Doges’ Palace before a demonstration of glass-blowing at a Murano glass factory. Then free time to discover some of the other 120 islands in the Lagoon and perhaps enjoy a fresh seafood lunch in one of the typical restaurants. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 6 - Venice (Mestre) – Verona – Florence (2 nights)
We enjoy a leisurely drive to Verona, Shakespeare's city of Romeo and Juliet as well as the ’Two Gentlemen’. Here an orientation tour, on foot, will show us the Roman arena and for the romantics, the balcony of Juliet. We continue into the hills of Tuscany to Renaissance Florence. On arrival a walking tour with a local guide shows us the Piazza della Signoria with its Renaissance sculptures, the Cathedral and Baptistery with its famed bronze doors and visits the Santa Croce Basilica – burial place of many great Italian men including Michelangelo. Tonight why not enjoy some delicious Tuscan cuisine? (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 7 - Florence at leisure
Your Tour Director will advise you on the best places to shop for hand-made leather and 18 carat gold jewellery, all located in the Santa Croce district where fine craftsmen have worked for centuries. This afternoon, you have the opportunity to take an excursion to Pisa, famed for its Leaning Tower. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 8 - Florence – Amalfi (2 nights)
We travel south into the Chianti hills and then through the Lazio region to stop at Montecassino where we visit the Commonwealth Second World War cemetery located beneath the famous Abbey.
Then through the fertile Campania and via Caserta to the Bay of Naples in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. We drive along the Autostrado to Salerno and then to the exclusive resort of Amalfi where we stay for the next two nights. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 9 - Amalfi – Excursion to the Isle of Capri
This morning we board our ferry and sail across the Bay of Naples to the island of the Emperor Tiberius. At leisure, perhaps take an excursion to Anacapri with its magnificent views and visit the charming white-washed villa of Dr. Axel Munthe. Later, we ‘return to Sorrento’, where an orientation shows us the Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia and visits an inlaid wood-working factory. We go back to Amalfi for dinner. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)
Day 10 - Amalfi - Rome
This morning's exciting highlight is a visit to the excavations at Pompeii. Here our local guide will bring to life the day to day existence of the early Romans as we explore the city which was preserved by the lava from the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Then we head back to Rome for the last night of our Italian Odyssey. (Buffet Breakfast)
Day 11 - Depart Rome
After breakfast, bid farewell to new-found friends as your Tour Director arranges a transfer to the airport for your return flight home. (Buffet Breakfast)
