good news for cancer patients
[показать](Photo grabbed from Yahoo News).Good news to cancer patients because a Japanese medical team by Toshiyuki Sakai has discovered a form of antibiotic that could prevent cancer patients from losing hair during chemotherapy.
Sakai said that his team had found "alopestatin" reduced hair loss by 70 percent when used on rats also given etoposide, a widely used drug in treating lung and other type of cancers but also causes hair loss.
Sakai, professor at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, said his team was hoping to put the agent.The study, which was outlined at an academic meeting in Japan last week, is still ongoing, and the chances are "low at the moment" that alopestatin will be commercialised soon, he said.
No clinical tests are yet in sight, but one possible use for humans would be to apply it to the head in the period when hair loss is most likely to occur during chemotherapy, he added.

A THORNABY councillor battling cancer has helped to raise funds for the hospital where she is being treated.
Allison Trainer, pictured middle, ward representative for Mandale and Victoria, discovered she had breast cancer last year and embarked on a punishing course of chemotherapy, losing her hair after her first session.
Yet despite her setbacks, the mum of three has remained upbeat and was spurred on to help organise a sponsored head shave and body wax to raise money for the breast care and chemotherapy units at Stockton’s University Hospital of North Tees.

What happens if a patient can't afford a wig?
One option not many people are aware of is that some insurance companies will help pay the cost of wigs required for medical cases. This way, you can pay a smaller amount of money and still get the wig you want.
A second option for those who can't afford wigs is to contact the American Cancer Society or CancerCare. These organizations offer free wigs for cancer patients in need.
Ask your physician if he/she knows of any local salons that offer free wigs for cancer patients. A lot of people out there are willing to help you out if you can't afford to spend hundreds on hair.
