Julia Margaret Cameron didn't even begin capturing images until she was forty-eight years old, after receiving a camera as a gift from her two daughters. From her home on the Isle of Wight, inspired by the works of Raphael, Giotto and Michelangelo, Julia took to her photography with an enthusiasm that bordered on obsession, photographing relatives, friends, artists and writers, and from her garden greenhouse-converted-to-darkroom produced a collection of work which is breathtaking in it's delicacy and beauty.
Julia herself summarized her photographic mission with these words: "My aspirations are to ennoble Photography and to secure for it the character and uses of High Art by combining the real and Ideal and sacrificing nothing of the Truth by all possible devotion to Poetry and beauty." -dh
